SUMMARY:'Wishing You Were Here' Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:‘Wishing You Were Here’ will be on display from Monday\, February 28 until Monday\, March 14 at 10C Shared Space (42 Carden St.\, Guelph). 10C is open to the public Monday to Friday 9 am to5 pm but appointments to view the artwork outside those hours or requests to purchase artwork can be made by contacting art@10carden.ca. \nJoin us for a closing reception with the artist will be held on Sunday\, March 13 1 pm to 3 pm. \nHave you ever stopped in the middle of a Costco store and just marveled at what you saw? The chaos\, the flow of bustling people\, the architecture that could be mistaken for no other building. Local artist Rebecca Payne has stopped and watched these commercial shopping spaces and patterns many times over the past few years. Their new body of work explores seeing a space for what it’s actually being used for\, how the use of space can change\, and the emotional effect spaces can have on oneself and others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRebecca Payne is a queer multimedia artist from rural Ontario. They are a graduate of the University of Guelph with an Honours BA in Studio Art\, with specializations in painting\, printmaking and drawing. They have a fascination with liminal spaces and parting with fleeting moments as they pass. Their current work explores themes of loneliness\, awkwardness\, and the mutual exchange between the artist and the environment.\n\n  \n  \n  \nLearn more about Rebecca Payne on their website.

SUMMARY:Make-Do Studio Tours at Femme Fest
DESCRIPTION:Make-do Studio Tour by Dawn Matheson\nLive ZOOM presentation\nMarch 16\, 7-8:30pm. Artist Talk and Studio Tours\, followed by Q and A with ALL artists in attendance.\nASL interpretation provided \nClick HERE to Register \nDawn Matheson will visit four female artists in their “make-do studios.” Each artist has collaborated with Matheson through participatory projects in the past\, but who themselves do not get to ‘live as artists’ as they are marginalized in society through poverty\, disability or cultural difference\, yet\, make art everyday for personal meaning-making\, creative expression and survival. These are true artists. \nMatheson will discuss the rich community collaborations that inform her work as a social-practice artist\, followed by video tours of the “Make Do” studios of four former co-creators. \nFollowing her talk\, Matheson will be joined by the artists themselves for an open Q and A. \n\n\n\n\n\nDawn Matheson’s art is about relationships. She is a Guelph-based multimedia artist with a socially engaged practice\, specializing in video and audio art\, installed\, broadcast and performed in public spaces. Her work can be found at festivals\, galleries\, museums; in national publications and on broadcast stations; but lives best in forests\, train stations\, fountains\, barns and alleyways in your neighbourhood. Through inclusive artistic practices\, Dawn seeks to interrupt civic and social spaces with unexpected moments of beauty\, curiosity and joy. Her relational interventions hope to offer liberation from everyday suffering and to dismantle barriers between individuals by creating alternative stories that build compassion and kinship. You can find out more about her work at thiswasnow.com \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalia Baskin-Kesselman\nTalia Baskin-Kesselman has performed at several Guelph Jazz Festivals with musicians including Jane Bunnett. She’s also performed with Guelph Glee Choir (directed by Katie Hampton) at the Red Brick Café. She has sung with The Ok Chorale and with Meditation and Music groups at Silence Guelph. She also enjoys singing Karaoke whenever possible.  Talia’s favourite musical artists include Taylor Swift\, Katy Perry and One Direction. Talia says\, “I like to make up harmonies to songs. I like to sing loud and proud.” \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n  \n\n \nJudy Noonan\nJUDY NOONAN is a Guelph artist\, writer and disability activist… “Art releases emotions. You can tell when I’m in a good place and when I’m not by the colours I use in art. … “If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint. \nJudy Noonan is of Italian and Irish descent and was adopted into a very artistic family who made everything! \n\n\n\n\n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nCheryl Turner\, an artist of several mediums including making reborn babies and pottery. Cheryl’s mom is of Scottish/Irish descent with Barbadian heritage on her dad’s side. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \n  \nNora Stasiukieiwcz\, is a 14-year-old Deaf actor who is currently in Grade 9 at E.C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. \nNora LOVES theatre and performance and hopes to have more opportunities on the stage to perform in her native language of ASL. \nShe lives in Guelph with her sister and her Polish-Canadian parents.

In 2008\, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art journalism from the College Art Association\, the jury of which stated: “Regardless of genre or medium\, Kraus’s works exemplify honesty\, wit\, and plot. She transforms art writing’s possibilities by rescuing theories of privilege\, gossip\, and feminism from their occasional tumbles into the lackluster. SUMMARY:A Forest Walk with Don Russell and Lisa Hirmer

SUMMARY:Remapping the River | Plant Walk with Christina Kingsbury and Danielle Gehl Hagel
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and herbalist Danielle Gehl Hagel and artist Christina Kingsbury for a foraging walk and conversation along the banks of the Eramosa River\, learning about how plant life tells its own story of migration and dislocation\, disruption and regeneration. Exploring the history of the riverbanks as former landfills and fluid spaces of botanical reclamation\, the walk will be a chance to share knowledge\, dreams\, and thoughts related to plants and the land. In the context of Kingsbury’s work with Meech Boakye on view at the gallery\, the artists use the idea of ‘transplant’ as a way of rethinking the connections between plant and human bodies\, considering the relationship between plants that have migrated without agency and the ways that human bodies have been transplanted against their will through displacement and enslavement. Registration is required as space is limited. \nTo register for this event\, please email Nicole Neufeld at nneufeld@artgalleryofguelph.ca

SUMMARY:Gordon Hill Press Spring 2022 Online Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Gordon Hill Press for its Spring 2022 Online Launch\, featuring readings by Ayaz Pirani\, Steffi Tad-y\, and Carl Watts. There will also be opportunity for some Q&A with the athors\, so bring your questions.\n\nTe event is free\, but you need to register through EventBrite – https://www.eventbrite.ca/…/gordon-hill-press-spring…\nHere’s a little more about the books –\n\nAyaz Pirani’s “How Beautiful People Are” – A trans-national\, inter-generational poetry of post-colonial love and loss animated by the syncretizing figure of Kabir and drawn from the extraordinary diwan of ginan and granth literature.\n\nSteffi Tad-y’s “From the Shoreline” – A full-length collection of poetry that brings forward diasporic experience as it intersects with mental illness. Family history and work lyrics occur against a tonal backdrop of the carceral. Yet Tad-y brings a tenderness to these fraught circumstances\, finding beauty in detail and repetitive acts of love.\n\nCarl Watts’ “I Just Wrote This Five Minutes Ago” – A book of poetry criticism that shows how contemporary poetry creates meaning and value\, how poetry might get real work out of us\, in the process locating and grounding us among real people and a real practice.

SUMMARY:Gordon Hill Press GUELPH COVID CATCH-UP LAUNCH!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Western Hotel on Sunday May 8 at 2:00 PM for a covid catch-up party and launch.\n\nThe event features readings by Ayaz Pirani and Carl Watts from our Spring 2022 Season\, plus more great Gordon Hill Press authors from past seasons who never got an in-person launch due to covid\, including Mike Chaulk\, Kevin Heslop\, Khashayar Mohommadi\, and Aaron Schneider\, along with special guest Jim Johnstone.\n\nHere’s a little about the readers. Stay tuned as we add more. –\n\nAyaz Pirani’s “How Beautiful People Are” – A trans-national\, inter-generational poetry of post-colonial love and loss animated by the syncretizing figure of Kabir and drawn from the extraordinary diwan of ginan and granth literature.\n\nCarl Watts’ “I Just Wrote This Five Minutes Ago” – A book of poetry criticism that shows how contemporary poetry creates meaning and value\, how poetry might get real work out of us\, in the process locating and grounding us among real people and a real practice.\n\nMike Chaulk’s “Night Lunch” is a shapeshifting sonnet sequence set in the cold waters off the North Coast of Labrador. Reflecting Chaulk’s own experience\, the speaker endures long irregular work hours\, weather\, icebergs\, and loneliness\, all the while navigating the taut intersections of race\, labour\, class\, and masculinity.\n\nKevin Heslop’s “the correct fury of your why is a mountain” – Poems that are by turns experiment\, lyric\, and incantation\, and that Jim Johnstone describes as “one of the most promising poetic projects to come out of Canada in recent years.”\n\nKhashayar Mohammadi’s “Me\, You\, Then Snow” – The debut full-length collection from Iranian-born poet\, Khashayar Mohammadi\, playing with ideas of national\, cultural\, and queer identities through a diverse set of forms and approaches.\n\nAaron Schneider’s “What We Think We Know” – A debut collection of short fiction that tests\, expands\, and sometimes explodes the limits of the short story\, and that Jean Marc Ah-Sen rates as “one of the most daring books to come out in recent memory.”\n\nJim Johnstones’ “Infinity Network” explores pressing questions about the ubiquity of surveillance and social media\, and evokes\, with a powerful intelligence\, the neurosis of living in a consumerism-obsessed era.
