SUMMARY:Death in Reverse: Performance in Precarious Times
DESCRIPTION:Death in Reverse: Performance in Precarious Times\nKate Story and Ryan Kerr\nMarch 25 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm\nImprovLab (Mackinnon Building Room 108)\nUniversity of Guelph\nFree\n\nOn March 25\, 2026\, artists Kate Story and Ryan Kerr will visit ImprovLab to share what it means to create meaningful work within conditions of precarity\, and on the unusual\, often improvised ways artists find to stay connected with audiences. They will share experiences from curating a contemporary theatre piece marked by setbacks: limited funding\, collaborative challenges\, shifting resources – while also finding unexpected forms of support through local politics\, partnerships\, and community networks. Reflecting on “Project Baroness\, ”they will also consider festival and DIY theatre\, arts and “non-arts’’ collaborations\, residency models\, and the fragile balance between fundraising and public funding that shapes small-scale performance ecosystems. “As Death in Reverse made its way toward the stage\, our work continually evoked echoes of DADA-era New York: periods of conflict\, displacement\, authoritarian tightening\, censorship\, and the suppression of movements for racial\, gender\, and LGBTQ2IA+ justice. Artists may have been worn down by their circumstances\, yet they continued to create. This conversation invites us to sit with those parallels—and with the quiet insistence of art that persists.” \nFull listing here.

SUMMARY:The Untold Genre
DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) is proud to present The Untold\nGenre live in concert on February 22\, 2026\, marking the launch of its new Youth\nConcert Series and a meaningful step toward building stronger cultural bridges between\nGuelph’s legacy arts institutions and communities that have not always been fully\nserved by them.\nThis special afternoon concert is intentionally programmed to honour the rich and\ndiverse musical heritage of South Asian traditions\, while also celebrating their vibrant\,\nevolving contemporary expressions. Through this event\, GYMC seeks to create space\nfor dialogue\, participation\, and shared musical experience—grounded in respect\,\ncuriosity\, and genuine inclusion.\nThe Untold Genre (TUG) is a Toronto-based fusion band known for weaving together\nIndian classical music\, Sufi traditions\, folk\, Bollywood\, regional styles\, and\ncontemporary influences into a powerful and immersive sound. Their work reflects both\ndeep cultural roots and a forward-looking artistic voice\, making them an ideal partner for\nGYMC’s vision of accessible\, community-centered music-making.\n“This concert is about more than a performance\,” says Damian Weston\, Executive\nDirector of the GYMC. “It’s about listening\, learning\, and acknowledging the incredible\nmusical knowledge and creativity that already exists within South Asian communities\,\nwhile inviting connection with broader audiences. We want young people—and the\ncommunity at large—to see themselves reflected on our stage.”\nThe event takes place at the Recital Hall at the Guelph Youth Music Centre (75\nCardigan Street\, Guelph) and features not only a live concert\, but also a hands-on\nworkshop and an open mic\, reinforcing GYMC’s commitment to participation over\npassivity.\nEvent Details\nWhen: February 22\, 2026 at 2:00 PM\nWhere: Recital Hall\, Guelph Youth Music Centre (75 Cardigan St\, Guelph)\nTickets: $10 / Pay-What-You-Can (PWYC)\nRSVP & Tickets:\nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticketing/the-untold-genre-live-at-the-gymc-youth-concert-s\neries\nSchedule:\n2:00 PM — The Untold Genre (Live Performance) \n3:00–3:15 PM — Intermission\n3:15 PM — Workshop with The Untold Genre\n3:45–4:15 PM — Open Mic (open to all audience members)\nThe open mic portion invites anyone in attendance to step forward—whether to sing\,\nplay\, recite\, or experiment—further reinforcing GYMC’s belief that music is a shared\,\nliving practice rather than a one-way presentation.\nThis concert officially kicks off the GYMC Youth Concert Series\, a new initiative\ndesigned to amplify diverse voices\, create welcoming entry points into live music\, and\nfoster meaningful cultural exchange through performance and participation.\nGYMC gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council – Conseil des\narts de l’Ontario and the Government of Ontario\, whose funding makes this important\nwork possible.\nFor more information\, visit gymc.ca.

SUMMARY:Mining for Story
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to uncover stories worth telling in this workshop. \nFacilitated by Dawn Matheson \nThis interactive workshop is all about the idea! You can’t get anywhere in filmmaking without somewhere to start\, and so often\, this is where people get stuck. \nYou’re eager to tell stories\, yet unsure what stories are yours to tell\, convinced your experiences aren’t interesting enough\, or tempted to borrow someone else’s narrative. Everyone has stories worth sharing. The key is learning how to uncover them. \nIn this 2-hour interactive session\, participants will uncover ideas rooted in personal interests and lived experiences\, explore the narratives that matter most to them\, and be encouraged to develop the authentic connections needed to build the relationships and context that help tell those stories with integrity. \n** Participants should come ready with at least one or two story ideas you are interested in telling. ** \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org for any questions or accessibility concerns.

SUMMARY:Trial Runners Xtra (feat. We Quit Theatre)
DESCRIPTION:Calling all visceral clowns\, earnest wailers\, sound sculptors\, body poets\, etc.! TRIAL RUNNERS is an experimental open mic— a low-pressure event for folks who make performances/videos/sounds to try stuff out in front of an audience. If you are interested in signing up to perform please email Trial Runners‘ host\, Megan Arnold\, at trialrunnersguelph@gmail.com. All are welcome to attend the event as audience members. \nAfter the live performance portion (8:30-10:30pm)\, there will be an “xtra” special live-streamed broadcast of Men Explain Things to Us… And We Like It! by We Quit Theatre\, an artist-duo based in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. \nIn the broadcast\, two impulsive\, unpredictable\, extravagantly gendered late-night talkshow hosts — Dasha Plett and Gislina Patterson — invite real life men into a cardboard and construction paper television studio to talk about their passions\, fears\, and what it’s like to be a man. Streamed live from Winnipeg\, Men Explain Things to Us… And We Like It! uses the space between reality and performance to transgress and re-write the unwritten rules and social etiquette of gender relations. Men Explain… is presented with support from send+receive\, Winnipeg Film Group\, Manitoba Arts Council\, and Canada Council for the Arts\, and is directed by filmmaker Ryan Steel.
