SUMMARY:Trial Runners Xtra (feat. We Quit Theatre)
DESCRIPTION:Calling all visceral clowns\, earnest wailers\, sound sculptors\, body poets\, etc.! TRIAL RUNNERS is an experimental open mic— a low-pressure event for folks who make performances/videos/sounds to try stuff out in front of an audience. If you are interested in signing up to perform please email Trial Runners‘ host\, Megan Arnold\, at trialrunnersguelph@gmail.com. All are welcome to attend the event as audience members. \nAfter the live performance portion (8:30-10:30pm)\, there will be an “xtra” special live-streamed broadcast of Men Explain Things to Us… And We Like It! by We Quit Theatre\, an artist-duo based in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. \nIn the broadcast\, two impulsive\, unpredictable\, extravagantly gendered late-night talkshow hosts — Dasha Plett and Gislina Patterson — invite real life men into a cardboard and construction paper television studio to talk about their passions\, fears\, and what it’s like to be a man. Streamed live from Winnipeg\, Men Explain Things to Us… And We Like It! uses the space between reality and performance to transgress and re-write the unwritten rules and social etiquette of gender relations. Men Explain… is presented with support from send+receive\, Winnipeg Film Group\, Manitoba Arts Council\, and Canada Council for the Arts\, and is directed by filmmaker Ryan Steel.

SUMMARY:Dusky Wing Film Club
DESCRIPTION:The Dusky Wing Film Club returns this fall with a series of film screenings! \nSomewhat Wild\nTuesday\, January 22nd @ 7PM\nGuelph Arts Council – 55 Wyndham Street N.\, Guelph ON\n*Free \nSynopsis: A shot breaks the dusk. Hunters with GPS screens follow their dogs into the forest\, and the night catches up with them. Elsewhere\, Maina counts her sheep daily. The wolf has been sighted nearby. Adam\, fascinated by this apparition\, goes out to look for it with his camera\, taking advantage of the full moon. Everyone relates to the animal in their own way\, but they agree on one thing: they all want to see without being seen. This beastly tale explores scenes of love and death\, control and care\, fascination and reverie that emerge from living with wolves on the borders of the Basque Country.

Her love of layers and texture combine in her original work. She achieves results using a combination of different surface design techniques. A lot of her work for the past few years has used aspects of history with an impact on our culture today. \nIn the current climate where everything is new\, instant\, and shiny\, history has relevance; old buildings have a soul that modern buildings do not possess. She finds herself returning to those old buildings to look at the marks of passing time. \nAna’s work has won numerous awards at national and international shows. Her work has been accepted into the Festival of Quilts in the UK where she won an honorable mention\, Quilt Canada where she’s won several awards\, and the International Quilt Festival in Houston where she won first prize in Abstract in 2017 and a third prize in Abstract in 2019. \nAna’s website: https://www.anabuzzalino.com/

SUMMARY:Practice-based Perspectives | Creative Research with Michelle Wilson and John Phillips
DESCRIPTION:What is creative research\, and how can it be understood\, supported\, and sustained? How does practice-based inquiry contribute to universities’ capacity to address pressing global challenges? Join us at the Art Gallery of Guelph on Thursday\, December 11 at 1 pm for the first in a series of dialogues involving varied faculty members and examining diverse sites of research—from artworks\, performance\, and film to exhibitions\, theatre\, and research labs—while exploring the role and impact of creative research. \nIn this session\, Dr. Michelle Wilson and Dr. John Phillips will discuss their distinct research questions and processes\, reflecting on how creative approaches generate new forms of knowledge. Focusing on Wilson’s work on view in AGG’s current exhibition Reworldings and Phillips’s recent projects including the spherical growroom designed for the Vaccarino Centre for Student Wellness\, the conversation will consider how creative research interpolates artistic practice and scholarly inquiry\, outlining conceptual frameworks\, methodologies\, and emerging opportunities for funding and institutional support. \nPresented by the Art Gallery of Guelph with the support of the School of Theatre\, English\, and Creative Writing at the University of Guelph. \n~ \nImage details (left to right): Michelle Wilson & Yancey Kaskamin\, Yancey (detail)\, 2024\, marten hide\, industrial wool felt\, wool roving (wet and needle felted)\, shoelace\, embroidery thread\, imitation sinew\, conductive thread\, microprocessor.
