SUMMARY:Opportunity Knocks: Re-Imagining your Arts Career
DESCRIPTION:November 6th 6:30-9:00  \nArt Gallery of Guelph\, 358 Gordon St\, Guelph\, ON N1G 1Y1 \nFree \nClick here to RSVP for this free event! \nGuelph Arts Council is pleased to collaborate with the University of Guelph’s School of Fine Art and Music and the Art Gallery of Guelph in presenting Opportunity Knocks: Re-imagining your Arts Career. How can arts students and emerging artists reimagine the careers they could pursue? What are the emergent\, entrepreneurial\, or unexpected career paths that arts grads have taken? A group of diverse arts trail blazers will share stories and lessons learned. Students\, artists and creatives of all disciplines\, ages and experience levels are welcome.  The Panel Discussion will run from 6:30pm-8:00pm followed by time to connect and enjoy refreshments. \n \nMeet the panelists: \nPaige Bromby is a painter and cultural administrator based in Fergus\, Ontario\, She holds a Bachelors of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Guelph (2020). \nWorking primarily in painting\, Paige explores her relationship to natural spaces in a digital age. She is interested in how familial spaces appear through her own interactions within them\, through a digital archive and as recorded and memorialized in paint. The many lives of a landscape – how those lives and interactions change through the seasons of nature and life.  \n \nShe maintains her painting practice while continuing her work in community arts\, facilitating a local critique night\, working for various arts/culture organizations and co-founding an artist mentorship program for artists with developmental disabilities. \n \nPatrick Cruz is an artist\, educator\, and albularyo who considers the role of spirituality\, improvisation\, intuition\, and play as emancipatory tools to reify embedded colonial frameworks and ideologies in art making. Cruz employs meditation\, divination\, and hypnosis as research methodologies to exhume and retrieve hidden knowledge. His works are informed by the intersections of clown philosophy\, magic\, and the occult\, and its syncretic manifestations and relationship in contemporary life. Most recently\, Cruz has been making works using material retrieved from past-life regressions to navigate and side-step cultural and ancestral identity. \nIn 2021\, he received the prestigious Thirteen Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines and won the national title for the 17th RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2015. He is an Assistant Professor in Studio Art at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and the Daniels Faculty. He is the founder and co-director of the Kamias Triennial\, co-curator of Ben Flores Fan Club Collective with Christian Vistan\, collaborator at Boring Earth with Laila Fox\, and one of the 19 members of the artist-run collective the Plumb. \n \nDaphne Zoe Dahlia / DAPH (She/Her) has been performing\, composing\, recording\, producing\, and mentoring artists for 20+ years. In 2017\, she founded Copper Sound\, a boutique recording studio in Guelph\, ON\, Canada. It serves as home base for her collaborations with artists locally and around the world. Daph’s work also includes musical directing for improv comedy\, audio mixing for commercials\, composing for film\, voice over work\, album art\, photography\, and website design. Daphne has been making new queer centred electronic music under the artist name DAPH. Her new direction combines deep vocals on top of hardware synths and samplers\, bringing together elements of synth pop\, house\, hip hop\, and darkwave.

SUMMARY:Fall Improv Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Fall Improv Workshop Series by the Friendly Heretic Theatre Company\n\nIn the theme of shedding leaves and autumn transformation\, we’re offering an exciting workshop series! What does it feel like to loosen up rigid patterns and beliefs about theatre\, about improv\, and our selves? What are the unique rewards of trying on new characters and strategies? What are the unique rewards of honest improv\, whether it comes out as comedic or not? What discoveries can we make when we let go of what we think we know?\n\nFor 6 weeks we’ll combine improv theory\, games and scene work to bring out fresh perspectives. This series is just as much meant for those brand new to improv as it is for those with plenty of improv experience. We all have some firm-ish beliefs about this artform\, which means that we all have exciting new discoveries to make within it. In the spirit of improvisation\, the unique gifts of everyone who joins the series will help to shape it. The only prerequisites are: an interest to learn and explore\, an enthusiasm for camaraderie\, and the willingness to try something new (regardless of your current experience level).\n\nClasses will be taught by Kevin Nunn.\n\nKevin is a professional and brilliant improv performer and teacher on a decades long journey. He aspires to ignite the flame of improv passion in as many hearts as he can. He is all around good human with an autistic slant and an absolutely undying passion for improv theory and the art of discovery. Kevin now makes his living in a non-theatrical profession\, and in the spirit of separating art and commerce as much as possible he refuses to profit financially from teaching improv. Part lecture and part workshop\, his classes are participatory and inspiring as students join in an exploration of the expanding possibilities of improvisation.\n\nDates & Times: Mondays 7pm-9pm\, Oct 20th – Nov 24th\n\nLocation: 10Carden Shared Space\, in the Activity Room\n\nCost: Pay what you can\, even if that’s $0. We aspire to make participation in improv accessible to everyone. Similar classes in the area cost $10-$20 per. All of our proceeds go directly toward theatre company overhead and to fueling our local theatre community. All teaching and executive board efforts are volunteered.\n\nSign Up: Send us a message on our social media channels\, or an email to friendlyheretictheatrecompany@gmail.com.\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/friendlyheretictheatrecompany?igsh=MWN6b3E0NDhicDk1\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/19TvaHtgeV/

SUMMARY:Dave Riedstra - Folds in Our Unfolding Trajectories
DESCRIPTION:September 27 – October 12 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday September 27\, 2-6pm \nDave Riedstra is a Guelph-based artist who works with quiet sound. Folds in Our Unfolding Trajectories is a sound installation in which hanging wooden forms resonate with the acoustic space and ongoing activity of the Guelph Youth Music Centre atrium. Sounds and movement in the space interact with the position of the hanging objects\, changing the patterns of resonance that ring out through their quiet feedback. Audio processing monitors these changes and incorporates their movement into its own generative system\, further interacting with the sound. Gently incorporating human\, arboreal\, machine\, and other processes and histories into a mixture of present sound\, Folds in… weaves its own trajectory among those in the atrium’s ecosystem. \nThis installation is proudly presented in partnership with Ed Video Media Arts Centre and the Guelph Youth Music Centre as part of Ontario Culture Days\, Canada’s annual celebration of arts\, culture and heritage. The GYMC’s 2nd floor Atrium is physically accessible by elevator. \nThe artist acknowledges the support of the Guelph Arts Council in the development of this work.

SUMMARY:Judith Nasby on Rolph Scarlett
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 25 at 12 pm for a talk by Judith Nasby\, Curator Emerita and founding director of the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre\, now the Art Gallery of Guelph. Exploring the life and legacy of Guelph-born artist and pioneering figure in North American modernism Rolph Scarlett\, Nasby will trace Scarlett’s remarkable seventy-five-year career—from his early days in Ontario to his influential work in New York as an avant-garde abstract painter\, set designer\, industrial designer\, and creator of sculptural jewellery. \nKnown for his bold geometric abstraction in the 1930s and 1940s\, Scarlett was championed by Museum of Non-Objective Painting Director Hilla Rebay as her “greatest find\,” with over sixty of his works held in the museum’s collection. Offering insights shaped by her decades-long curatorial career and extensive research\, including her publication Rolph Scarlett: Painter\, Designer\, Jeweller\, Nasby will present a compelling portrait of a visionary artist whose contributions continue to resonate in the world of modern art. \nImage details: Rolph Scarlett\, Lyric Dramatic\, circa 1945\, oil on canvas. Gift of the Artist\, 1977 University of Guelph Collection at the Art Gallery of Guelph
