SUMMARY:TRIAL RUNNERS - Experimental Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:Calling all visceral clowns\, earnest wailers\, sound sculptors\, body poets\, etc! TRIAL RUNNERS is an experimental open mic – a low-pressure event for folks who make performances/videos/sounds to try stuff out in front of an audience. Feel like trying something you’re not sure is going to work? Something you’ve never done before? Something a lil too freaky for regular open mics? \nThe venue has a physically accessible front entrance and one gender neutral washroom. \nThe event is $5-10/PWYC. \nSign up by emailing trialrunnersguelph@gmail.com by August 8th! Please indicate what you’re interested in presenting\, the amount of time you need to set up/present your work (up to 20 minutes)\, and any requests re: technical equipment\, accessibility\, etc. Or just show up on August 22nd! 🤡 🎤 💃 🦋 🍰 \nSpecial thanks always to Ed Video for partnering on this event.

SUMMARY:Art for Social Change Workshop Series - Miikawaadizi: They Are Beautiful and Know What They Are Doing
DESCRIPTION:FREE\, Spaces limited – Register/RSVP at the link in bio! \nArt Not Shame’s sixth workshop of the Art For Social Change Workshop Series\, generously supported by OPIRG Guelph\, is “Miikawaadizi: They Are Beautiful and Know What They Are Doing”. This workshop will take place on Tuesday\, August 19th from 5-8 pm in our space\, and is co-facilitated by Issac Two White Feather and Lori Gentle Eagle. \nIn this free\, participatory art workshop\, Isaac Two White Feather and Lori Gentle Eagle invite the community to learn what mental health and justice looks like through an Indigenous lens. The collaborative effort will be centred around creating a ceremonial blanket to wrap around a person looking to reignite their divine spark. By sewing\, painting\, and patching messages of hope on this blanket\, we will demonstrate that ruptures can be repaired when we care about each other. \nIssac Two White Feather is a member of the Wolf Clan from Saugeen First Nation who is now living on Treaty 3 (Cambridge\, ON). After surviving a childhood disconnected from his cultural roots and enduring many overdoses in his young adulthood as a result of the aftereffects of multi-generational trauma\, Two White Feather is grateful to have been given another chance to live the good life (mino-bimaadiziwin) and to give back to others; all while still navigating his way on the Red Road with a vulnerable brain. \nLori Gentle Eagle is of French Canadian\, Irish\, Scottish roots and Wise Woman ancestry. Committed to decolonization and allyship with Indigenous People for many years\, in both professional and personal circles\, she now grips her cane and walks proudly as an Empath with the medicine name “Gentle Eagle” gifted by Gaisheda Kheawok of The Whispering Song Teaching Lodge.

SUMMARY:Queer Ecology Hike: Land\, Story\, and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Art Not Shame’s fourth workshop as part of the Art for Social Change Workshop series\, is “Queer Ecology Hike: Land\, Story\, and Belonging” led by facilitator Zwena Gray. On Sunday\, August 10th\, participants will meet at the Boathouse sign in (116 Gordon St\, Guelph) to embark on a two-hour guided hike of the Eramosa River Trail. \nHikers meet at the Boathouse sign (116 Gordon St\, Guelph) at 1pm \nFREE\, Spaces limited – Register/RSVP at this link! \nRegistration is open to all community members. No outdoor experience is required. \nZwena Gray’s guided hike will weave together land connection\, storytelling\, and queer ecology. This is not just a walk in the woods\, it’s an invitation to slow down\, listen deeply\, and reflect on what it means to belong: to ourselves\, to each other\, and to the land. \nRooted in Black and queer ways of knowing\, this hike creates space for reflection\, rest\, and quiet joy. Along the trail\, we’ll pause for grounding practices\, storytelling prompts\, and gentle conversation. Together\, we’ll explore how land holds memory\, how our bodies carry story\, and how nature can be a place of both healing and resistance. \nZwena Gray (she/they) is a storyteller\, facilitator\, and land-based dreamer. Born in Detroit and rooted in many places\, Zwena’s work lives at the intersections of ecology\, identity\, and collective memory. \nThrough Queer Ecology Hikes\, Zwena creates reflective spaces where folks can return to land and to themselves. Her practice weaves together storytelling\, movement\, and ancestral listening\, reminding us that healing is possible in community\, and that land holds our histories as much as our futures. \nZwena became the first Black woman to thru-hike the 900km Bruce Trail\, not as a performance\, but as a love letter to presence\, grief\, and Black joy in nature. Zwena carries a commitment to justice\, wonder\, and reimagining public space as a site of care\, rest\, and resistance. \nHome is not always a place\, it’s people\, plants\, stories\, and stillness. Zwena builds toward futures where we can all belong more deeply.
