In 2008\, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art journalism from the College Art Association\, the jury of which stated: “Regardless of genre or medium\, Kraus’s works exemplify honesty\, wit\, and plot. She transforms art writing’s possibilities by rescuing theories of privilege\, gossip\, and feminism from their occasional tumbles into the lackluster. Never one to hold her tongue\, Kraus helps other women speak with equal force.”\n\nMFA students in our Studio Art program will host Open Studios\, giving the community a chance to tour studios and become acquainted with this dynamic\, unique program and its award-winning students. This year’s students include:\nMegan Arnold Alicia Barbieri sophia bartholomew Yan Wen Chang Rihab Essayh Julien Fisher Samuelle GrandeMeg Ross Chelsea Ryan Michael Thompson Kelly Uyeda Thomas Weir\n\nPlease plan to join us for the MFA Open Studios before and after the lecture: 3:00-5:30 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m.\nRegister today for the Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:Make-Do Studio Tours at Femme Fest
DESCRIPTION:Make-do Studio Tour by Dawn Matheson\nLive ZOOM presentation\nMarch 16\, 7-8:30pm. Artist Talk and Studio Tours\, followed by Q and A with ALL artists in attendance.\nASL interpretation provided \nClick HERE to Register \nDawn Matheson will visit four female artists in their “make-do studios.” Each artist has collaborated with Matheson through participatory projects in the past\, but who themselves do not get to ‘live as artists’ as they are marginalized in society through poverty\, disability or cultural difference\, yet\, make art everyday for personal meaning-making\, creative expression and survival. These are true artists. \nMatheson will discuss the rich community collaborations that inform her work as a social-practice artist\, followed by video tours of the “Make Do” studios of four former co-creators. \nFollowing her talk\, Matheson will be joined by the artists themselves for an open Q and A. \n\n\n\n\n\nDawn Matheson’s art is about relationships. She is a Guelph-based multimedia artist with a socially engaged practice\, specializing in video and audio art\, installed\, broadcast and performed in public spaces. Her work can be found at festivals\, galleries\, museums; in national publications and on broadcast stations; but lives best in forests\, train stations\, fountains\, barns and alleyways in your neighbourhood. Through inclusive artistic practices\, Dawn seeks to interrupt civic and social spaces with unexpected moments of beauty\, curiosity and joy. Her relational interventions hope to offer liberation from everyday suffering and to dismantle barriers between individuals by creating alternative stories that build compassion and kinship. You can find out more about her work at thiswasnow.com \n\n\n\nFeatured Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTalia Baskin-Kesselman\nTalia Baskin-Kesselman has performed at several Guelph Jazz Festivals with musicians including Jane Bunnett. She’s also performed with Guelph Glee Choir (directed by Katie Hampton) at the Red Brick Café. She has sung with The Ok Chorale and with Meditation and Music groups at Silence Guelph. She also enjoys singing Karaoke whenever possible.  Talia’s favourite musical artists include Taylor Swift\, Katy Perry and One Direction. Talia says\, “I like to make up harmonies to songs. I like to sing loud and proud.” \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n  \n\n \nJudy Noonan\nJUDY NOONAN is a Guelph artist\, writer and disability activist… “Art releases emotions. You can tell when I’m in a good place and when I’m not by the colours I use in art. … “If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint. \nJudy Noonan is of Italian and Irish descent and was adopted into a very artistic family who made everything! \n\n\n\n\n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nCheryl Turner\, an artist of several mediums including making reborn babies and pottery. Cheryl’s mom is of Scottish/Irish descent with Barbadian heritage on her dad’s side. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \n  \nNora Stasiukieiwcz\, is a 14-year-old Deaf actor who is currently in Grade 9 at E.C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. \nNora LOVES theatre and performance and hopes to have more opportunities on the stage to perform in her native language of ASL. \nShe lives in Guelph with her sister and her Polish-Canadian parents.

SUMMARY:'Wishing You Were Here' Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:‘Wishing You Were Here’ will be on display from Monday\, February 28 until Monday\, March 14 at 10C Shared Space (42 Carden St.\, Guelph). 10C is open to the public Monday to Friday 9 am to5 pm but appointments to view the artwork outside those hours or requests to purchase artwork can be made by contacting art@10carden.ca. \nJoin us for a closing reception with the artist will be held on Sunday\, March 13 1 pm to 3 pm. \nHave you ever stopped in the middle of a Costco store and just marveled at what you saw? The chaos\, the flow of bustling people\, the architecture that could be mistaken for no other building. Local artist Rebecca Payne has stopped and watched these commercial shopping spaces and patterns many times over the past few years. Their new body of work explores seeing a space for what it’s actually being used for\, how the use of space can change\, and the emotional effect spaces can have on oneself and others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRebecca Payne is a queer multimedia artist from rural Ontario. They are a graduate of the University of Guelph with an Honours BA in Studio Art\, with specializations in painting\, printmaking and drawing. They have a fascination with liminal spaces and parting with fleeting moments as they pass. Their current work explores themes of loneliness\, awkwardness\, and the mutual exchange between the artist and the environment.\n\n  \n  \n  \nLearn more about Rebecca Payne on their website.

SUMMARY:Two Rivers Arts-Based Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:A free\, two-part workshop series to connect with Two Rivers community members and beyond to collaboratively imagine\, design and build instruments to be hosted at the Huron Community Garden. No musical\, artistic\, or building experience is necessary. We ask for your willingness to connect\, share\, listen and grow together\, and a commitment to attend as many sessions as possible. \nRegister Here! \nPart 1 – We’ll host community circles to share stories\, visions of the neighbourhood\, previous community experiences\, hopes and dreams for our community\, and thoughts around music\, instruments\, and building. We’ll also play some activities together. \nPart 2 – Based on the conversations we’ve had as a community\, we’ll create designs together and find ways to build the instruments from those designs. This project has some budget to bring in supportive community artists who can support our building process\, as well as budget for building materials. \nCulminating Event – At this event\, participants will be invited to share about the process\, designs\, & instruments themselves. This will mark the completion of the series. \nWhen\nEvery Saturday between February 12th and March 26th\, 1pm–2pm. The culminating event will be hosted on Saturday\, April 2nd. 8 Saturdays total. \n*A commitment to attend as many as possible is encouraged because connecting with community over time gives us a chance to develop deeper relationships. Of course\, if there’s a reason you can’t attend one weekend\, you are still invited to join us at the future sessions. \nWhere \n\n\n\nHuron Community Garden. 120 Huron Street\, located on the lot at the corner of Huron Street and Manitoba Street. An email with the link will go out at least one hour prior to our gathering if there is inclement weather expected\, or if we need to meet online for any other reason. \nWhy\nTo connect with our community members. We’re doing it to play and improvise with each other and our circumstances\, and to enjoy our time together outdoors! \nWho \n\n\n\nannais linares\, a current PhD student at the University of Guelph\, is supported by the Musagetes Foundation in Guelph and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. She has been developing this series in collaboration and partnership with the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group. In order to reflect on our time together and learn about how arts-based workshops can benefit our community\, the workshop sessions will be documented. Participants will be provided a consent form at the first session where we will discuss this aspect in more detail. More notes on this can be found below.
