SUMMARY:Gordon Hill Press Spring 2023 Guelph Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Guelph publisher Gordon Hill Press is launching its Spring 2023 titles on Wednesday May 7\, 7:00 EDT\, at the ArtBar (formerly the Ebar\, above The Bookshelf) with readings by Emily Osborne and Jeffery Donaldson\, along with guest readers Shane Neilson and Chris Pannell.\nThe event is free\, and everyone is welcome.\n\nEmily Osborne’s Safety Razor combines personal lyric poems with translations from Old Norse\, its taut poems running like high-wires between the poles of terror and joy\, danger and safety\, erudition and naivety. Get a copy here – https://www.gordonhillpress.com/…/products/safety-razor.\nJeffery Donaldson’s Momento: On Standing in Front of Art is a series of short\, lyric reflections offering a poetic daydream about the curious\, otherworldly\, but urgent and existential experience of art\, artifacts\, and the buildings that house them. Get your copy here – https://www.gordonhillpress.com/…/prod…/momento-preorder.\n\nShane Neilson’s Saving illustrates his personal experience of “madness” and describes his struggles with neurodivergence from the point of view of both patient and practitioner. In this poignant memoir about fatherhood\, illness\, and family\, he shows that it is possible to not only escape the wreckage of the past\, but to celebrate living with disability in the present. Get your copy here – https://www.greatplains.mb.ca/product/saving-a-doctors-struggle-to-help-his-children/.\n\nChris Pannell’s Adventurize Your Summer!\, is a wide-ranging look at travel\, art and life. The author writes poems about the “Eastern Migrating Tourist\,” and the indifference of the waters of the Nile\, with many stops in between. It is filled with keen observation\, touched with both sorrow and the wry observation that life is never what is promised in the marketing copy. SUMMARY:Art in a Just Recovery Mural Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Art in a Just Recovery Mural Unveiling \nOn June 7th participants of Art in a Just Recovery will gather at the Guelph Farmers Market for an evening of community care\, as we celebrate the installation of our community mural. The mural was co-created by over 70 participants of Art in a Just Recovery\, a community arts project exploring community care and collective artmaking. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame\, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, and social artist Melanie Schambach\, participants created individual art pieces that have come together to form a large-scale digital mural. The project was designed\, in the context of the pandemic and ongoing recovery\, to increase participants’ sense of purpose and belonging by fostering connection within and across Guelph’s neighbourhoods and sharing participants’ stories in a public way. \nThis event will bring participants and other community members together to reveal the mural for the first time. To celebrate\, the event will include live music by a project participant\, healthy\, local food options\, and an exhibit of participants’ individual art pieces. Before the mural is unveiled\, we’ll invite a panel of participants to share the story behind their artwork and their reflections on community care. Following the official unveiling\, participants will be encouraged to stick around to build connections and make even more art together! \nRSVP HERE! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOUR INTENTION\nWe’ve been thinking a lot about what community care means and feels like\, and it is our intention that care be the central intention of the project\, both in terms of how we create together and what we create together.

SUMMARY:Towards Truth Film Screenings
DESCRIPTION:In the continuing journey TOWARDS TRUTH the Rotary Club of Guelph and the Bookshelf honour Indigenous month with 4 Indigenous films. Do not miss this opportunity to explore the Indigenous culture and unique challenges they face. Reconciliation comes after the Truth is learned. \nTwice Colonized – June 6\,7\, 7:00pm\nTickets available HERE through the Bookshelf \n\n\nAaju Peter is a force of nature. Upon the sudden and tragic death of her son\, this fierce protector of her ancestral lands and renowned Greenlandic Inuk lawyer and activist embarks on a journey to bring her colonizing countries\, Canada and Denmark\, to justice\, and to reclaim her language and culture. In her efforts to establish an Indigenous forum at the European Union\, she must first confront the wounds inflicted upon her by colonization and navigate through existing white dominance. Finding strength within her own vulnerabilities\, Aaju rises from the devastation of colonialism to unite Indigenous activists in the North in her fight for future generations. While director Lin Alluna approaches the story with a deeply sensitive lens\, Aaju maintains powerful agency over her own story. In a film that unites Greenland\, Denmark and Canada as production countries\, Twice Colonized becomes a powerful catalyst for future conversations around colonization and filmmaking." – Heather Haynes\, HotDocs 2023.\n\n\nFalls Around Her – June 14\,15\, 7:00pm\nTickets available HERE through the Bookshelf\n\n\n\nFalls Around Her is a 2018 Canadian drama film\, written\, produced\, and directed by Darlene Naponse. [1] The film stars Tantoo Cardinal as Mary Birchbark\, an internationally famous First Nations musician who returns to her home community to recharge and reevaluate her life\, only to find that her fame is not so easily left behind. [1] The cast also includes Tina Keeper\, Gail Maurice\, Johnny Issaluk and J.D. Nicholsen. [1] The film was shot on the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation reserve near Sudbury\, Ontario.\n\nBones of Crows – June 16-21\, times TBA\nTickets available HERE through the Bookshelf\n\n\n\nBones of Crows is a multi-generational epic and story of resilience told through the eyes of Cree Matriarch Aline Spears (played throughout her life by Summer Testawich; Grace Dove\, Monkey Beach; and Carla Rae\, Rutherford Falls). Removed from their family home and forced into Canada’s residential school system\, young musical prodigy Aline and her siblings are plunged into a struggle for survival. Over the next hundred years\, Aline and her descendants fight against systemic starvation\, racism and sexual abuse—and to build a more just future. In the face of a rapidly shifting and hostile world\, Aline's remarkable journey moves through memories of residential school\, perilous adventures across snowy traplines and classified London bureaus\, where\nshe works as a code talker in the Second World War. Supported by her daughter Taylor\, a determined lawyer\, and granddaughter Percy\, the family’s creative force\, Aline must find the strength to step into her role as family Matriarch and confront the scars of the past. A sweeping drama grounded in historical truth\, Bones of Crows weaves together underrepresented moments in Canadian and Indigenous history\, including the Indigenous contributions to WW2\, the\nongoing cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Aline’s story enriches our understanding of the past and empowers us to address our collective future.\n\n***All above screenings will be regular Bookshelf Cinema admission prices***\n\nOur People will be Healed – June 28\, 7:00pm\nPay as you can and theatre seats are on a first come\, first served basis.\n\n\n\nOur People Will Be Healed\, Alanis Obomsawin’s 50th film\, reveals how a Cree community in Manitoba has been enriched through the power of education. The Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre in Norway House\, north of Winnipeg\, receives a level of funding that few other Indigenous institutions enjoy. Its teachers help their students to develop their abilities and their sense of pride.

SUMMARY:An Obituary\, Carmen Mattear Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:May 18th – June 1st\n \n“This body of work is a collection that archives nostalgia\, bringing to light the past life of personal artifacts and the disconnect between sound and source. Each piece lacks a body – representing the person\, place or memory from my childhood and adolescence\, when I was living within a family unit. The pieces work as a means to grieve my experience living at home\, being cared for and feeling safe. I pay these memories tribute and offer them as an obituary. I’ve titled the body of work An Obituary. But it is by no means a depressing one\, it is one filled with ridiculous conversations\, singing in the car\, being sung to sleep\, and filleting fish at the cottage\, above all it is an obituary of gratitude.”\n\n\nCarmen Mattear (born 2000) is a multidisciplinary artist who collects media as data and finds patterns through method\, and are then translated and expressed as sound installation\, sculpture\, video\, and VR. Her practice is informed by cinema\, music\, television\, and family relations. For Mattear\, art is about creating organized chaos\, in which anecdotes emerge\, revealing our positive humanism. Mattear currently lives in Guelph\, ON and holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours\, with Distinction\, in Studio Art from the University of Guelph\, where she also completed a minor in Psychology.\nOpening reception Thursday\, June 1st from 6-8pm

SUMMARY:DEPARTURES - The Space Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE RESERVE SOON!\nReservations: passionateheartdance@gmail.com\n\n\nSuzette Sherman and Michele Green will celebrate their final two presentations of Passionate Heart in a special collaboration with author and performer Linda E. Clarke. DEPARTURES will offer two dances from the Passionate Heart repertoire along with a retrospective created in collaboration with Linda’s vivid and personal stories.\n\nPassionate Heart and Linda collaborated in March 2022 to present This is not a Fairytale… and they are thrilled to once again combine movement with stories of departures\, wound together with the beautiful music of Ludovico Einaudi.\n\n\nLinda brings thirty years of hearing stories\, telling stories\, writing stories\, and teaching stories to this collaboration. She believes that telling a story is an act of generosity\, receiving a story is a fundamental act of hospitality. It’s how we connect with one another.\n\n\n\n\nIn 2017\, Suzette coaxed Michele out of retirement to join forces for a performance at the Guelph Dance Festival. This led to the formation of Passionate Heart in 2018 and\, during the next five years\, they built a repertoire of fourteen works created by themselves and David Earle\, performing in many locations in Southern Ontario. In September 2022\, Passionate Heart was invited to La Roche D’Hys in France to present three performances and two workshops. The two presentations of DEPARTURES will bring the total number of performances to 50.\n\n\n\n“The Passionate Heart experience and our decision to perform in an intimate studio environment to small audiences has been a transformative journey for us. The connection we have felt with those in attendance (even when masked!) has been more than we could ever have imagined. We are very grateful for those who have given their heartfelt comments and continued support throughout this journey. We are truly blessed.” – Michele & Suzette\n\n\nIf you would like to support the work of Passionate Heart\, donations large and small are gratefully accepted by e-transfer to greenmichele31@gmail.com

There is a ramp and accessible parking spot near the U-Haul rental facility. You are also able to enter through the rear entrance of the brewery on York Road\, there will be an accessible spot marked with a pylon.\nWe aim to create a navigable space within the market for those who use mobility aids.\n\nWe will also have earplugs available at the event for those who are sensitive to sound or have sensory processing issues. \n\nIf you have a question or suggestion regarding accessibility please email us at feministcreatives@gmail.com as we are always looking for ways to improve.\n\n Volunteers\nIf you are interested in volunteering at the market\, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/wUmwmFqHNRJPTKKDA\n\nAbout the Market & Organizer\nThe idea for an inclusive and diverse market was born out of Siyobin’s passion for putting her politics into practice and led to the actualization of an event that she had dreamed of for years.\nAs a queer\, disabled maker of colour who had frequented many vendor markets\, she had noticed a distinct lack of diversity and focus on support of the artisans at these events. This was very disappointing to her\, so she decided to run the first Feminist Holiday Market in 2017 and create a community centered space. In 2019\, Siyobin Blanco was awarded the Queerator of Arts & Culture Award\, from the Guelph Pride Committee\, for her feminist markets and live performance shows.\n\nPlease email feministcreatives@gmail.com for media inquiries.\n\nFollow the Feminist Events by Siyobin to stay connected for upcoming markets & shows\nwww.facebook.com/feministevents\nwww.instagram.com/feministevents
