SUMMARY:The Knitting Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:Actor\, writer and knitter Kirk Dunn will be presenting his multidisciplinary one-man show\, The Knitting Pilgrim\, featuring the Stitched Glass tapestries\, at Harcourt United Church on Friday\, March 21st\, 2025 at 7:30PM. \nThe show\, which theatre critic Lynn Slotkin called “a stunning piece of theatre… glorious and so moving\,” combines personal storytelling\, image projection and three huge knitted panels\, designed in the style of stained-glass windows\, that look at the commonalities and conflicts of the Abrahamic Faiths: Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam. It recounts Kirk’s 15-year artistic and spiritual journey handknitting the ambitious project\, and looks at why the faiths struggle to get along today\, the meaning of art\, the hell of grant-writing and the power of love to overcome major obstacles (and minor mishaps). The show premiered at the Aga Khan Museum in 2019\, and has been performed to acclaim over 90 times in Canada\, Austria\, Germany\, and the United States. \nMore info here!

SUMMARY:ANIMA presents : The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale by Luke Hathaway & Benton Roark
DESCRIPTION:ANIMA Early Music is thrilled to present The Sign of Jonas; An Apocalypse Folktale\, with texts by Luke Hathaway & music by Benton Roark. This (55-minute) work will be performed by Mother Country\, a beautiful roots music ensemble led by Benton Roark (voice\, banjo\, guitar & piano) and featuring Andrew Ivens (voice\, mandolin\, guitar\, piano & lap steel)\, Phil Albert (voice & bass) & Chris Hull (percussion). Mother Country will be joined by ANIMA’s artist co-directors\, Daniel Cabena (voice & fiddle) & Luke Hathaway (spoken word). \nHere are a few notes about this work from composer Benton Roark: \nSparse in construction\, timeless in imagery\, arcane in meaning\, and proto-mythical in characters and narrative\, The Sign of Jonas superimposes personal apocalypse on environmental and cultural collapse. It imagines a song cycle lost and found: a musical manuscript orphaned by the cataclysms of the 21st century\, and rewakened to ritual life far in the future. The fragmentary text speaks of travelling\, of death and rebirth\, of decay and regeneration; the music is a ritualized series of part songs\, responsorials\, chants\, chorales\, and incantations\, performed as a folk-music-pageant-mystery-play\, complete with communal singing and other forms of audience participation. When our lives end\, they continue in one another.

SUMMARY:Over-saturated
DESCRIPTION:New works from Paige Bromby at 3rd Floor Gallery. \nSee the exhibition from March 17-April 19.\nGallery Hours: Monday – Friday\, 3pm – 5pm & Saturday\, 12pm – 5pm \nPaige Bromby is an emerging artist and community facilitator based in Fergus Ontario\, on the traditional lands of the Petun\, Anishinaabeg\, Haudenosaunee\, Attiwonderonk\, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Working primarily in painting and drawing\, Bromby explores her relationship to the land in a digital age. \nBromby creates paintings that explore the recording\, translation and filtering of the landscape through both artist and technology. Working from her own photographs Bromby breaks down her images through digital manipulations and layered composition\, she pursues a translation with each individual brush stroke. Initially maintaining a strong connection to the screen\, eventually the image is abandoned and she begins relying on reveries and instinct to find the landscape in a middle ground between artist and technology.

SUMMARY:Intuitive Weaving
DESCRIPTION:During the darker winter days\, it’s nice to have a meditative art practice to turn to to help you relax and practice mindfulness. Weaving can have a tangible outcome (like a wall hanging or placemat)\, or be purely for relaxation and play – without the pressure of outcomes. Either way\, it becomes a transcript of your mood and imagination. \nIn this 2 hour class\, we will learn the basics of weaving with little to no financial investment. Using a cardboard loom that we make ourselves and the provided materials\, we will go over basic weaving techniques. \nWe will let the materials guide us and see where they take us. Our intuition will lead us while we slow down our thoughts and enjoy the creative process. No prior weaving experience necessary!

SUMMARY:Paula Nadelstern speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Meeting\n\n\nSymmetry & Surprise: The Kaleidoscope as Design Inspiration\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKALEIDOSCOPE – the very word promises surprise and magic\, change and chance. Exploding with visual excitement\, a kaleidoscopic design organizes an abundance of color and shape into a complex\, coherent and unique whole. Honored by inclusion in the Twentieth Century’s 100 Best American Quilts\, her designs have inspired products including the vast carpet in the Hilton Americas hotel in Houston\, TX and were showcased in the American Folk Art Museum’s first one person exhibition highlighting the work of a contemporary quilt artist (2009). \nPaula’s website: https://www.paulanadelstern.com/ \nVisit https://rcqg.square.site to purchase a $10 guest pass. SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to plan\, design\, create\, and print a monotype! Use new materials and learn a variety of techniques to create your desired image\, then watch the magic of the printing press take place as you pull your print through. \nMonotype is a process of printmaking created by drawing or painting on a matrix (plexiglass or other smooth surface) which is then printed using an intaglio press to create a single (mono) print. It is a unique type of printmaking as it’s the only form that creates a single image instead of a full edition of the same print. This form of printmaking is great for folks who like to paint or draw and are interested in trying out a new medium! \nAll materials will be supplied\, no experience necessary. \nTo ensure willing participants have access to arts opportunities\, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers. Space permitting\, we can provide complimentary admission.

SUMMARY:Gathering Sparks/James Gordon Fundraising Concert
DESCRIPTION:Folk/roots music & harmonies that will lift your spirits! \nGATHERING SPARKS (Jane Lewis & Eve Goldberg with Cheryl Prashker)\nJAMES GORDON\nSATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 15 at 2 pm\nHarcourt Memorial United Church\, 87 Dean Ave\, Guelph \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) supports those who are experiencing food insecurity in our community with respect and dignity. \nTickets: $15 General/$25 Supporter/$35 Patron/By Donation at the Door \nDoors open at 1:30 pm. Concert from 2pm – 4pm. \nGATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk\, pop\, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar\, piano\, accordion\, and ukulele. They were nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year\, and won the 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” award. You will come to listen\, and walk away singing! \nCHERYL PRASHKER studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada\, U.S. Europe and Russia. She spent many years in NY City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll\, Klezmer\, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. Between tours\, James is a record producer\, playwright\, community activist\, theatre director and he was a Guelph City Councillor for eight years. \nwww.chalmerscentre.ca * www.gatheringsparks.com * www.jamesgordon.ca \nYou’re invited to bring an optional food item contribution to CCSC’s food pantry. A list of requested items can be found below. \nMORE ABOUT CHALMERS: \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) is a registered charity that is the only no-proof-of-income-needed food pantry in the City of Guelph – operating Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Fridays. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities. At CCSC\, we pride ourselves in offering no-judgement services to Guelph patrons\, allowing users to choose from a variety of food options that both are culturally-diverse\, and adhere to those with dietary restrictions. We have a mandate to provide healthy\, fresh food to our guest\, propelled by philosophies of inclusiveness and community. We welcome all\, and every attempt is made to create a warm\, caring environment to those who attend. \n\n\n\n\nOPTIONAL PANTRY DONATION – REQUESTED ITEMS## \n• Cans of “no salt added” tomatoes \n• Low sodium pasta sauce \n• Cans of kidney beans\, black beans and chick peas \n• Cans of beans in sauce \n• Canned vegetables: corn\, mixed vegetables\, peas\, green beans \n• Rice \n• Pasta\, elbow and spaghetti preferred \n• High fibre breakfast cereal \n• Rolled oats and plain instant oatmeal \n• Powdered milk \n• Canned meat: chicken\, tuna \n• Tea

Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \n\nThis event is recommended for adults. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nSusan Mogul’s film contains mature themes and conversations.\nRegistration is appreciated but not required. Seating and space are limited\, so early arrival is encouraged.\n\n  \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend.   \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.
