SUMMARY:Gathering Sparks/James Gordon Fundraising Concert
DESCRIPTION:Folk/roots music & harmonies that will lift your spirits! \nGATHERING SPARKS (Jane Lewis & Eve Goldberg with Cheryl Prashker)\nJAMES GORDON\nSATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 15 at 2 pm\nHarcourt Memorial United Church\, 87 Dean Ave\, Guelph \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) supports those who are experiencing food insecurity in our community with respect and dignity. \nTickets: $15 General/$25 Supporter/$35 Patron/By Donation at the Door \nDoors open at 1:30 pm. Concert from 2pm – 4pm. \nGATHERING SPARKS is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis—musical friends who bonded over finely tuned harmonies and the craft of songwriting. Their inclusive approach embraces folk\, pop\, blues and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar\, piano\, accordion\, and ukulele. They were nominated for a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year\, and won the 2019 Folk Music Ontario “Songs From the Heart” award. You will come to listen\, and walk away singing! \nCHERYL PRASHKER studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal\, Canada\, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada\, U.S. Europe and Russia. She spent many years in NY City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll\, Klezmer\, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her special style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Eric Andersen\, Jonathan Edwards\, Pat Wictor\, Tracy Grammer\, Full Frontal Folk and her own Celtic Roots Music group RUNA. \nJAMES GORDON has been there. He’s done that. He has had a remarkably diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 42 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence for the ’Basic Black’ and ‘Ontario Morning’ programs. Between tours\, James is a record producer\, playwright\, community activist\, theatre director and he was a Guelph City Councillor for eight years. \nwww.chalmerscentre.ca * www.gatheringsparks.com * www.jamesgordon.ca \nYou’re invited to bring an optional food item contribution to CCSC’s food pantry. A list of requested items can be found below. \nMORE ABOUT CHALMERS: \nChalmers Community Services Centre (CCSC) is a registered charity that is the only no-proof-of-income-needed food pantry in the City of Guelph – operating Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Fridays. Due to the pandemic severely limiting city-wide programs and supports for families\, as well as income streams for many caregivers\, CCS has seen numbers of first-time food pantry users increase exponentially. This was showcased as 1 in 7 residents in Guelph reported living in a food insecure household\, with 1 in 6 reported being severely food insecure (2021). This has been perpetuated by increasing costs at the grocery stores on food\, hygiene products\, and basic household necessities. At CCSC\, we pride ourselves in offering no-judgement services to Guelph patrons\, allowing users to choose from a variety of food options that both are culturally-diverse\, and adhere to those with dietary restrictions. We have a mandate to provide healthy\, fresh food to our guest\, propelled by philosophies of inclusiveness and community. We welcome all\, and every attempt is made to create a warm\, caring environment to those who attend. \n\n\n\n\nOPTIONAL PANTRY DONATION – REQUESTED ITEMS## \n• Cans of “no salt added” tomatoes \n• Low sodium pasta sauce \n• Cans of kidney beans\, black beans and chick peas \n• Cans of beans in sauce \n• Canned vegetables: corn\, mixed vegetables\, peas\, green beans \n• Rice \n• Pasta\, elbow and spaghetti preferred \n• High fibre breakfast cereal \n• Rolled oats and plain instant oatmeal \n• Powdered milk \n• Canned meat: chicken\, tuna \n• Tea

SUMMARY:Candid Corner with Ed Video
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ed Video\, the Art Gallery of Guelph invites you to an engaging evening featuring a screening of Susan Mogul’s 1997 film\, I Stare at You and Dream\, currently showcased alongside a collection of over 80 quillboxes in the exhibition Do You Remember Love. The film highlights the intersecting lives of four individuals\, following the intertwining familial and romantic relationships that explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nEvent Highlights \nCandid Corner Pop-Up: At 6:30 pm\, participate in Ed Video’s interactive video recording station where you can share your thoughts and reflections on relationships\, relationality\, and family\, themes inspired by the film. \nFilm Screening: Stay at 7:30 pm to watch Mogul’s intimate exploration of the lives of four individuals over six months. \nBefore the screening\, program facilitators will prompt participants with thought-provoking questions about relationships\, interpersonal connections\, and family ties. Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \n\nThis event is recommended for adults. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nSusan Mogul’s film contains mature themes and conversations.\nRegistration is appreciated but not required. Seating and space are limited\, so early arrival is encouraged.\n\n  \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend.   \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy.

SUMMARY:Music In The Air - Improv Singing
DESCRIPTION:Music In The Air – Improv SingingWith Jane Lewis\n“We have a duty towards music\, namely\, to invent it.” — Igor Stravinsky\nWhere does music come from (if we’re not reading a score or singing a song we already know)? Take a deep dive into improvisational singing\, and experience the thrill of creating spontaneous music. We’ll explore different ways to create vocal music individually and as a group\, based mainly on the Vocal River exercises created by Rhiannon.\nWe’ll work on inventing melody as well as adding harmony and syncopated parts. It will involve musical creativity\, deep listening\, collaboration\, blending voices\, stretching our comfort zones\, and supporting one another.\nThe main requirement is that you can match pitch at least relatively well\, and that you are fairly comfortable sharing your voice in a group (since there will be times when your voice will be heard alone). If this is pushing your comfort zone\, but you want to work on it\, that’s great too. Feel free to contact me if you’re not sure this is a fit for you.\nDates: Wednesdays\, February 12th 2025 to March 5th 2025\nTime: 7pm – 8:30 pm\nLocation: Art Not Shame – 119 Wyndham Street Guelph\nCost: $100-$125 sliding scale\nRegistration & Questions? SUMMARY:The Years Of Which I’ve Spoken to you- 10C Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“The Years in which I’ve spoken to you”  is the visual amalgamation of a wordless conversation. A dialogue with creativity itself in which the artist separates themselves and acts as a channel to be spoken through. The works in this series speak to the subtle and constant tension within the human form tirelessly contending with unseen guides\, picking and prying your internal compass. \n As defined by writer Paulo Coelho “Everything is written in the soul of the world and there it will stay forever.” Gabbi’s work in turn seeks to be in dialogue with the soul of the world\, the infinite well of knowledge\, through the language of intuition. She depicts both the cautionary tail of a false prophet\, and the knowledge the soul of the world affords those who will listen. Ultimately the trinity of human choice\, divinity and evil are on display through these large scale paintings of the female form intertwined with nature. \nLocation: 10c (42 Carden)\nReception date: Feb 22 from 6:30-8:30pm\nShow date: Feb 1-28

SUMMARY:Teresa Duryea Wong speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Meeting\n\n\nJapan 2.0\n\n\n\n\nMeet the Next Gen of Japanese quilt artists. Japan’s history and cultural norms set very clear rules for who is and who is not considered a Master\, and this lecture will explain why\, and how\, that happens. But in the Japan 2.0 universe\, there is a community of quilters for the 21st century who are operating outside the rigid cultural lines of the traditional Master/Student relationship. They are creating original\, modern quilts with a global eye while still managing to reference the Japanese aesthetic. \n\n\nTeresa’s Bio\nTeresa Duryea Wong is an author\, lecturer\, and quilt historian. She is the author of Sewing & Survival: Native American Quilts from 1880 – 2022\, and five additional books covering Japanese quilts and textiles\, American quilts and cotton\, and quilts for social justice. She is a contributing writer for Quiltfolk. Teresa is a member of the International Quilt Museum advisory board and the Quilt Alliance board. She has been recognized as a scholar by the Visions Museum of Textile Art in San Diego and the Texas Quilt Museum. Her lectures are popular with American quilt guilds\, and she is invited regularly to lecture at the annual Quiltcon and International Quilt Festival events. She is also a quiltmaker and antique quilt collector. \nTeresa’s website: https://TeresaDuryeaWong.com \nVisit https://rcqg.square.site to purchase a $10 guest pass. SUMMARY:In Conversation with Susan Mogul
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nRegister here.
