SUMMARY:UW Fine Arts MFA Thesis One: Christine De Vuono | Sarah Martin
DESCRIPTION:University of Waterloo Art Gallery\nApril 13-29\nOpening Reception: Thursday April 13\, 5-8 pm \nChristine De Vuono\n\nCare Packages\nCare Packages is a series of textile installations that focus on elements of caregiving: caring for the sick and elderly; caring for those growing into new identities or life situations; and caring for each other in times of distress or loneliness. Sourcing materials from local thrift stores\, I repurpose scrubs worn by caregivers\, tablecloths and lace decorations\, bedsheets\, and pillowcases\, to symbolize our universal need for care\, safety\, and intimacy. As cultural signifiers these second-hand textiles are meant to evoke the feminine\, since the act of caregiving has been traditionally performed by women. Through my artwork I celebrate women of the past and the present\, inviting all\, regardless of gender\, to embrace the labours that lead to a healthy and resilient society. \nChristine De Vuono is a multimedia artist working with drawing\, sculpture\, collage\, installation\, and photography. The materials of each project are chosen specifically to engage viewers in new ways to examine societal norms and values. Her work utilises antiquated practices and mindful labour\, emphasising the disparity between past traditions and present efficiencies. Often focusing on the transitions we face in life\, her work celebrates the needs of the psyche for beloved care and lived beauty. \nSarah Martin\nSomething to soften the blow\nSomething to soften the blow is an installation incorporating textile\, photography\, and video to challenge the horror genre and the concept of the Final Girl. The research leading to this body of work critically explores tropes and traditions of slasher films\, specifically looking at the first victim\, to consider notions of consumption and disposability\, and how this relates to narratives concerning gender\, sexism\, and race. \nSarah Martin works in a photo-based practice to investigate pop culture and media through a critical feminist lens. Themes of her current work consider the vernacular of the horror genre through manipulating archives of film footage and performing death in staged photographs. Alongside her studio work is an active interest in curatorial practices\, most recently curating work at the Homer Watson House and Gallery\, Marilyn I. Walker Gallery\, and Rodman Hall Art Centre. \nADMIT EVERYONE\nUniversity of Waterloo Art Gallery\nEast Campus Hall\, Room 1239\n519.888.4567 ext. 33575\nWebsite\nFacebook\nInstagram \nCONTACT\nIvan Jurakic\, Director/Curator\n519.888.4567 ext. 46741\nijurakic@uwaterloo.ca \nHOURS\nWednesday to Saturday 12-5 pm\nOr by appointment \nMOBILITY\nGround floor entry\nAutomated doors available at Fine Arts entrance\nWide pathways\nAccessible washrooms on ground level \nDRIVING\n263 Phillip Street\, Waterloo\nEast Campus Hall (ECH) is located adjacent to Engineering 6 (E6)\nCampus map \nPARKING\nVisitor Parking is available in Lot B beside Engineering 6 (E6) for a flat rate of $5\nCampus map \nMAILING\nUniversity of Waterloo Art Gallery\n200 University Avenue West\nWaterloo\, ON\, Canada N2L 3G1

SUMMARY:Dopamine Dance Against PD - Parkinson’s Can’t Stop Me From Dancing!
DESCRIPTION:When Barbara Salsberg Mathews tweeted a video of herself dancing on February 25\, 2023\,\nshe didn’t expect to receive such an amazing response. Within just a few short days\, her tweet\n“Parkinson’s Disease can’t stop me from dancing” had received over 15\,000 views. \nEven more amazingly\, many other people living with Parkinson’s began replying by posting\nvideos of themselves dancing. What started as an optimistic and defiant tweet against PD had\nbecome a mini-internet sensation. This gave Barbara an idea. Together\, with founding PD\nAvenger member\, Richelle Flanagan\, Dopamine dance against PD was born. \nTo raise awareness about Parkinson’s and World Parkinson’s Day you’re invited to participate\nonline. We’re asking everyone to boost their dopamine and dance against Parkinson’s for the\nweek leading into World Parkinson’s Day on April 11. Help raise awareness of the fastest\ngrowing neurological condition affecting 10 million people\, 40% of whom are women and 30%\nunder the age of 60. Help break the stigma of Parkinson’s and take a video of yourself busting\nout your greatest dance moves and post them on social media starting on April 3 until World\nParkinson’s day on April 11. \nDance is a powerful form of self-expression and has been linked to benefits for people living\nwith Parkinson’s disease. Be sure to share your video using the tags #dopaminedancepd\n#dancepartypd and #dance4parkinsons starting on April 3 and encourage others to do the\nsame. \nBarbara says\, “Together let’s spread the message that Parkinson’s can’t stop us from dancing!” \nIf you’re looking for some inspiration\, take a peek at Barbara’s original tweet to see her dance\nmoves as well as some of the people who replied to her. \n“We hope that Dopamine Dance Against PD will raise awareness of Parkinson”s. There is still no\ndefinitive cause or cure for this disease. We must spark conversation\, spark action\, and spark a\nmovement. Together\, we can end Parkinson”s in our lifetime.” \n— Larry Gifford\, President PD Avengers \nFor more information\, or to book an interview\, please contact:\nBarbara Salsberg Mathews\, Cell: 416-565-2359\, salsbergmathews@gmail.com\nhttps://salsbergmathews.com Artwork provided by Barbara Salsberg Mathews
