SUMMARY:Art in a Just Recovery
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS ART IN A JUST RECOVERY?\nArt in a Just Recovery (AIJR) is a local community arts project that explores community care in the context of our ongoing pandemic recovery in Guelph. We’ll explore these ideas together through art and story-telling. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition’s newly formed Creative Collective\, participants will create individual art pieces that eventually form a large-scale digital mural. We will also invite interested participants to contribute to building community-based knowledge about care. \nWHO IS INVOLVED?\nArt in a Just Recovery is a collaborative project between Art Not Shame\, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, University of Guelph researcher\, Amy Kipp\, social artist lead\, Melanie Schambach\, and several community Art Buddies. The project will also consist of two mental health workers who will provide support throughout the project. \nWe are inviting members from the community from ages 10+ to participate. \nWHEN\nWhole Group Workshops | February 27th – April 17th | Mondays\, 6-8pm | online \nArt Buddy Workshops | March 29th – April 22nd | Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, or Saturdays \nClick here to register. \nAs a participant of Art in a Just Recovery\, you will be a part of one of eight Art Buddy Groups that are based on art mediums and locations. Once the project begins\, you will able to share which Art Buddy Group you’d like to be a part of. \nOUR INTENTION\nWe’ve been thinking a lot about what community care means and feels like\, and it is our intention that care be the central intention of the project\, both in terms of how we create together and what we create together.

SUMMARY:Fourth Friday: Shane Philips
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate Black Heritage Month\, Guelph Museums has partnered with Guelph Black Heritage Society for February’s Fourth Friday. We are pleased to host Shane Philips\, an internationally acclaimed musician with a whole lot of soul. Philips is described as a singer whose voice is beyond his years and yet his message is timeless. Shane is an environmental and social activist\, and his songs spread messages of change\, love\, and community. \nEvery Fourth Friday of the month enjoy free admission to the Civic Museum from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.\, and a free concert starting at 7 p.m. \nTickets will be available January 27\, 2022. Reserve yours on Eventbrite! \nThe concert will also be streamed on our Facebook Page\, and available for a limited time afterwards on our YouTube channel and Museum Everywhere portal.  \nDue to high demand for seating\, please arrive at the Museum and take your seat by 6:50 pm. Seats not claimed by this time may be re-assigned to rush line visitors.\n \nPlease let us know in advance if you can no longer attend so we can release the ticket to others wishing to attend. \nCash bar. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nPhilips’ career as an artist has spanned the last 30 years from his first cassette tape release in 1990 and then to six CD’s from 1996 to 2016. During this time Philips toured North America as a singer and performer playing original music while performing in a lead role as “Sammy Davis Jr.” in the musical “The Rat Pack” which toured Germany\, Austria and Dubai. Fast forward to 2019\, Philips later completed a “Harry Belafonte” musical tribute which toured Quebec. In 2008 Philips began to receive film and TV placement within the Lifetime Network and his singing eventually earned him a spot on the NBC show “The Voice” in 2014 and was eventually cast off because producers officially said he was “too soulful”. Shane deemed it a major compliment and used it as a guide in his path forward. He slowly understood that singing songs of hope and change were what his inner voice hungered for. With the completion of a coast-to-coast US tour in 2014 of which culminated at the San Francisco Folk Festival\, Philips used that momentum to propel his journey forward and was eventually given the opportunity in 2015 to sing with his musical inspiration Stevie Wonder as part of the cast ensemble for the concert finally at the Scotia Bank Centre in Toronto\, Canada. This once in a lifetime experience was followed up with a one on one meeting between Philips and Wonder where the main topic of discussion was the state of the world. A year later in 2016\, Philips would form Band of People\, a non-profit music collective that shared a vision for peace and harmony expressed through music. That summer Philips was asked to sing one of his original compositions at the official protest rally downtown Philadelphia during the Democratic Convention to protest the side lining of then Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders. To a crowd in the thousands\, Philips\, as one youth put it\, inspired and gave hope to the idea that people standing together could make a difference. As a recording engineer\, at the age of 22 Shane was running a co-op for his local high school as well as Fanshawe College in London Ontario. Shane’s approach to music production was refined by his time signed to a Montreal based Mile End Records where he spent years learning audio techniques from veteran engineers at Studio MixArt. Shane believes in keeping things simple and using the best equipment available for any specific environment. As a performer himself\, Shane learned how to coach fellow artists that found themselves in front of a mic. This would later become an asset as he began to work in the field of location audio with CEO’s\, politicians\, NGO’s and a wide variety of other clients to record interviews\, marketing campaigns and documentaries such as the Rwandan Healing Project in 2019.Shane’s path as an artist traveling the world inspired him to use music for positive change devoting time and energy to activism promoting human rights\, veteran affairs\, social and environmental change. Early on in 2002 one of his songs was adopted by the York Regional School Board for an anti-drinking and driving campaign and then in 2011 Shane began his personal journey as a water activist walking not only once but twice from his hometown of Guelph Ontario to Queens Park in Toronto to highlight issues of equity when it came to local and global water rights. He eventually volunteered his time in the summer of 2021 “Ear to the Ground Water” campaign which connected communities all over Ontario through series of walks in solidarity for water protection and First Nations rights. Philips currently continues to produce and record new music while singing in renowned venues including The Reservoir Lounge.www.shanephilips.comwww.bandofpeople.com

SUMMARY:Indigenous Podcast Storytelling – Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Ed Video’s Technical Director\, Elia Morrison\, interdisciplinary artist\, Dawn Matheson and Anishinaabe Truth Speaker and activist\, Mary Joanne Schuller \nFebruary 23rd\, March 2nd\, March 9th & March 23rd | 7-9PM \nIndigenous storytelling is characteristically self-reflective and shares history with next generations. It is believed that when we share a story and something resonates with another person\, their spirit is connected to that story. They are able to relate directly to the story without having witnessed the events via DNA\, and they know it to be true. \n  \nIn today’s world one can effectively share their story through a podcast. This four-part workshop series breaks down the basics of creating a podcast and using it to tell your own story. This series consists of both instruction and discussion. It will explore the conceptual aspects of idea formulation; digging deep for a story and telling it to resonate and connect with someone else. It will also cover the technical aspect of podcasting. Participants will learn about recording a podcast with devices as simple as using a mobile phone as well as using more advanced recording equipment.  Participants will also learn about the ways one can edit a podcast and finally how to upload your own podcast for a listening audience.  \n  \nPlease email workshops@edvideo.org with any questions\, accessibility needs and to register.

By bringing to the gathering a diverse\, informative\, creative\, and\, sometimes\, unlikely combination of speakers\, artists\, and musicians\, the festival offers a program that connects to the ongoing work and needs of many organizations and individuals that wish to make the world a better place. For this reason\, we involve a large team of volunteers\, partner organizations & businesses\, sponsors\, and creative people who have a say in who we invite\, how we frame the discussions\, and how we keep the conversation going after the festival is over. \nThe Program\nBlack Vitality: Life\, Listening\, and The Sugar Shack \nThursday\, January 26\, 2023; 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm \nThis Big Ideas in Art + Culture talk with artist Derrais Carter is a collective listening session masquerading as a lecture. These approaches are characterized by a reluctance to accept the power\, presence\, and perpetuation of white supremacy in mainstream Canadian culture\, and a failure to recognize the fundamental limits to creating a food secure future without first acknowledging and working toward dismantling settler-colonial legacies. \nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nRose Beef Drag Brunch \nSaturday\, January 28\, 2023; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm\n\nJoin Toronto’s notorious drag queen Mikiki for a curated\, Golden Girls themed brunch! This year\, local zinesters\, poets\, and publishers will join international micro presses from the Publication Studio Network on Saturday afternoon from 1–6pm in a print media lover’s dream.  Peruse hand-made and locally published books and print media and support small book makers and publishers. \nTwo panels will take place during the fair\, with time to visit the tables during and between the sessions: \n2pm – 3:30pm Author Simon(e) van Saarloos in conversation with Ricky Varghese and Catherine Clune-Taylor \n3pm Snack Break: browse the book vendors \n4pm – 6pm A Print Community Publication Network panel \nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nSimon(e) van Saarloos with Ricky Varghese and Catherine Clune-Taylor \nSaturday\, January 28\, 2023; 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm\n\nCatherine Clune-Taylor\, Simon(e) Van Saarloos and Ricky Varghese join each other for a conversation about the limits and possibilities of consent\, the queer and anti-racist potential of addressing ageism\, and the need for difficult stories and unsettling narrative—as for example encountered on the couch in psychoanalysis\, in Black feminist readings and rewritings of the archive\, in science-fiction novels and films\, in sexual fantasies and experiences. \nThe conversation will be informed by Clune-Taylor’s work on intersex conditions and securing cisgendered futures for children\, Van Saarloos’ discussion of the age of consent in their forthcoming Against Ageism: A Queer Manifesto\, and the contradictions of pleasure and sex positivity Varghese encounters in his practice as a psychoanalyst. \nDrawing from a wide range of theoretical fields and personal experiences\, Clune-Taylor\, Van Saarloos and Varghese connect over their non-monogamous research practice\, characterized by a scholarly promiscuity and institutional infidelity. \nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nA Print Community Publication Network panel \nSaturday\, January 28\, 2023; 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nPublication Studio is a community of sibling bookmakers and publishers who make handmade books and work together in a flexible international network.\nJoin panelists from Publication Studios in São Paulo\, Montevideo\, Hudson\, and Glasgow for a discussion about community in print. What is the “social life of the book”? Why is independent publishing so important to a global community of readers? How does bookmaking constitute a “way of making” culture\, and what relationship does a book’s physical production have to its contents?  The panel will feature publishers Darío Marroche (PS Montevideo)\, Annie Hazelwood (PS Glasgow)\, and Patrick Kiley (PS Hudson). Moderated by Laura Daviña (PS São Paulo).\nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON\n\n\n\n  \nEver Deadly: Film Screening & Performances \nSaturday\, January 28\, 2023; 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm\n\nEver Deadly is an immersive\, visceral music and cinema experience featuring Tanya Tagaq\, avant-garde Inuit throat singer\, and created in collaboration with award-winning filmmaker Chelsea McMullan. This documentary explores Tagaq’s transformation of sound with an eye to colonial fallout\, natural freedom\, and Canadian history. \nWe witness Tagaq’s intimate relationship with the Nuna—the Land—a living\, breathing organism present in all forms of her improvised performances. Ever Deadly weaves concert footage with stunning sequences filmed on location in Nunavut\, seamlessly bridging landscapes\, stories and songs with pain\, anger and triumph—all through the expressions of one of the most innovative musical performers of our time. \nAccompanying our screening of the film will be performances from guest Inuk artists curated by Taqralik Partridge. \nThe Bookshelf\, Quebec Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nThe radical potential of ekphrasis for Blackness\, Access\, and Magic \nSunday\, January 29\, 2023; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\n\nThe term “ekphrasis” refers to the practice of describing artwork\, for example a poetic description of a painting. Ekphrasis is known for its potential to augment a work—in translating the original artwork\, a collaboration emerges which can potentially contribute to revealing an artwork’s essence. \nCape Breton-based disability advocate and social practice artist Aislinn Thomas\, Berlin-based writer Erin Honeycutt\, and Big Ideas lecturer Derrais Carter come together to discuss how the practice of describing artwork forms an intimate part of their distinct practices and communities—be they Disability arts communities and the pleasure of audio description\, Black communities and multiple ekphrastic descriptions of the iconic painting The Sugar Shack\, or communities of poets and the “image magic” of writing that Honeycutt discusses in her book Sensible Structures. Come listen together and lounge with us as we investigate the connections between these artists. Blankets and pillows are welcome and lounging encouraged if that helps you feel comfortable. \nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON. \nMegaflora Film Screening & Discussion \nSunday\, January 29\, 2023; 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm\nJoin choreographer Michael Spencer Phillips for a screening of his latest short film Megaflora\, and learn more about the process of creating dance works for the natural environment.\n\nRiver Run Centre\, Woolwich Street\, Guelph\, ON.
