SUMMARY:Improvising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Emergence of a New Field of Interdisciplinary Inquiry\n\nOctober 16–21\, 2023\nMassey Hall\, University of Guelph \nImprovising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition marks the celebration of a significant milestone in the emerging field of Critical Studies in Improvisation.  \nThe founding of the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) at the University in Guelph was facilitated by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant\, awarded in 2012. The Partnership Grant set in motion a decade of robust research and creative outputs generated by a team of scholars\, researchers\, community partners\, and arts practitioners on a local\, national\, and international scale.  \nThis exhibition illustrates the formalization of improvisation as a field of academic inquiry over the ten+ year period of the SSHRC Partnership Grant in which the institute was named (2012 to 2022) and narrates how IICSI has evolved into a central source for the collection and dissemination of research on the social implications of improvisational practices.   \nImprovising Communities invites you to explore\, inquire\, investigate\, and play with a curated selection of sample projects generated by IICSI’s network during this extended period\, from practice-based community programming to accessible new media technologies. The exhibition encourages you to consider one of IICSI’s central research questions: can improvisation be a vehicle for positive social change?  \nThis exhibition takes places October 16–21\, 2023 in Massey Hall\, at the University of Guelph. \n  \nThe Hand You Are Dealt: Improvising the Archive\nIn late 2022\, IICSI approached Studio Oleomingus\, a partner on their new SSHRC grant “Improvising Futures\,” about creating a video game which showcases the last ten years of IICSI’s research findings. Enthusiastic and up for the task\, Studio Oleomingus and IICSI set to work to determine the format\, content\, and technical specifications of the game\, meeting monthly with an advisory committee to talk through ideas\, troubleshoot potential issues\, and narrow in on a delightful player experience.\nAfter almost a full year of collaboration\, what emerges is a freeform digital toy: a collection of playing cards that contain within them a variety of media\, including audio tracks\, documentaries\, short films\, photographs\, recorded performances\, artwork\, and more\, from different research and creative outputs generated by IICSI and their network over the past decade. We proudly present to you\, The Hand You Are Dealt: Improvising the Archive. \nHosted on your web browser\, the game is accessible to anyone with an internet connection\, and it invites players to discover the intricacies of IICSI’s diverse array of researchers\, partners\, and community organizations\, all while learning a little bit about the institute’s research and activities.  \nIICSI and Studio Oleomingus hope the game will be as fun to play as it is informative\, and hope the game leads to a wider conversation about improvisation in the exploration of digital archives and interactive art. \nThe video game will premiere at our exhibition opening night\, on Monday\, October 16 at 7 pm at Massey Hall\, University of Guelph. \nExhibition Schedule\nMonday\, October 16\n7–9 pm | Opening Reception \nJoin IICSI for the opening reception of Improvising Communities: A Retrospective Exhibition at Massey Hall\, University of Guelph! The evening will be divided into two parts: a special premiere of our video game The Hand You are Dealt: Improvising the Archive and talk back with Studio Oleomingus creators Dhruv Jani and Sushant Chakraborty\, and an exclusive screening of the documentary Cape Spear Klang (2021) and talk back with Directors Ellen Waterman and Diego Pani. Light refreshments will be provided. Massey Hall is a physically accessible venue. \nPlease RSVP to attend!

SUMMARY:Animal Forms- Residency Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come home to the forest\, gather ’round the fire\, and share in celebrating the completion of Animal Forms\, an interactive love-letter to the land by Guelph Artist in Residence\, Miki Tamblyn. \nAnimal Forms is an interactive mask making and wearing project about shapeshifting\, playing\, and empathy between species. How might our experience of the world change if we practised seeing through another’s eyes? \nThroughout the summer the people of Guelph have participated in this project through facilitated ‘sit-spot’ sessions\, interacting with hand-made animal masks and documenting their reflections through journaling and photography. Now that these sessions are complete and the masks have been brought to life\, join Miki for one last gathering to say thank you to the forest and to our animal kin. \nThis final gathering will include an artist talk from Miki about the process of mask-making\, gratitude sharing around a fire\, and an opportunity for all to express and ponder their connection to land and our other-than-human relations. The masks\, photographs\, and journals will also be on display and available for interaction. \n  \nThe Guelph Outdoor School (Where the Two Rivers Meet) \n733 Stone Road East \nGuelph\, ON

SUMMARY:Guelph Culture Days: Creativity Is...
DESCRIPTION:Creativity has no borders. It is not restricted to a place or time. \nJoin artist Mary Kroetsch at Riverside Park’s big picnic shelter and engage in small talk by completing the sentence “Creativity is…” with a single word scribed in any fashion. Then using supplied tools\, make the word scream loudly with any kind of mark making. Consider beautiful words made ugly and ugly words made beautiful. \nThe aim of this activity is to offer a safe place and space for participants\, plus a little time\, to share something that a simple three word sentence can say\, empowering community to redefine a public space as a creative-led conversation forum. \nConversation not only conveys and sparks ideas but also enthusiasm and passion. Everyone’s experiences\, expertise\, and opinions are unique. Sharing them with others can foster a creative environment. And a creative environment is open and welcoming to many people coming together for a brief moment of understanding\, tolerance and unity. \nThe “Creativity Is” sentences will provide inspiration for a future installation at Guelph Civic Museum.

SUMMARY:Guelph Jazz Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Guelph Jazz Festival\, 14-17 September\, marks the 30th Anniversary year of the event\, three decades animating the city with world-class live music performances by artists from the regional\, national\, and international fields of creative improvised music. We are proud to announce the key elements of this special event’s programming. \nHighlights of the Ticketed Concert Series include Nicolas Caloia’s astounding Montreal-based 22-piece ensemble\, the Ratchet Orchestra (15 Sept)\, featuring some of Canada’s finest improvising musicians –– Lori Freedman\, Jean Derome\, Josh Zubot\, Tom Walsh\, to name a few –– interpreting Caloia’s inspired and wide-ranging book of compositions. The UK/Swedish/French quartet [Ahmed] (14 Sept) –– Pat Thomas\, Seymour Wright\, Joel Grip\, Antonin Gerbal –– will perform for the first time in North America. They employ the music and philosophy of the pioneering composer Ahmed Abdul-Malik as a lens through which to channel churning\, vertiginous group improvisations that are\, at once\, conceptually rich and utterly visceral. Vancouver clarinettist and composer François Houle leads his GENERA Sextet (16 Sept)\, an international assembly including Benoît Delbecq\, Marco von Orelli\, Harris Eisenstadt\, Michael Bates\, and Samuel Blaser. They will perform the In Memoriam suite\, dedicated to the memory of Ken Pickering\, the founding Artistic Director of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and a special contributor to the field in Canada. \nVirtuoso New York pianist Cory Smythe (16 Sept) will employ a range of mysterious electro-acoustic interventions to augment the piano as he presents the latest of his deep\, set-length investigations of the enigmatic Jerome Kern/Otto Harbach standard\, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” The Lina Allemano Four (14 Sept) features the superb Berlin/Toronto based trumpeter’s group\, with Brodie West\, Nick Fraser\, and Andrew Downing\, that has extended the sound of classic Ornette Coleman Quartets to something wider-ranging and truly contemporary over its two-decade lifespan. The Susanna Hood Trio (15 Sept) features its leader\, a singular singer/dancer from Montreal whose improvisations across these two disciplines are simply without peer. Her trio\, with pianist Tania Gill and saxophonist Kayla Milmine\, presents unPacked\, their stunning version of Packet\, a suite of songs by Steve Lacy setting emotionally packed feminist poems by Judith Malina. Vancouver violinist Josh Zubot leads his String Quintet (16 Sept)\, with Jesse Zubot\, Meredith Bates\, Peggy Lee\, and James Meager\, through his ingenious composing designed to activate the improvising resources of this superb West Coast band. \nLearn about all the Ticketed Concert Series Artists here and Festival Schedule here; more artists to be announced in the weeks to come. Tickets and passes for the 2023 Guelph Jazz Festival go on sale on 12 July; more information here.
