SUMMARY:Ctrl+Shift: Algorithmic Animosity- Online Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 17 | 7—8:30pm EDT \nOnline via Zoom \nFREE (register here) \nA panel focusing on how social media platforms—notably Meta platforms—mediate diasporic knowledge sharing practices and long distance relationships. The Filipino Diaspora often communicates with loved ones local and abroad via social media or messaging platforms like Facebook\, Instagram\, WhatsApp\, and TikTok. Rooted in capitalism and colonialism\, these platforms extract and appropriate traditional stories\, teachings\, and practices to package and sanitize them for white western audiences to consume. \nArtists Megan Arnold\, Excel Garay and The Noise Witch\, and moderator Madeleine Lychek\, will discuss how platforms based in capitalism and western colonialism encourage traditional knowledge sharing for proliferation but incite algorithmic racism\, data mining\, and digital censorship. \nThe event is presented as part of InterAccess’s Ctrl+Shift series. Ctrl+Shift is a strategy session series that invites influential artists\, technologists\, scholars\, and community leaders to propose solutions to challenges that affect the creative community. Structured as a panel discussion\, Ctrl+Shift seeks to facilitate productive conversations and actionable strategies that can elicit change in our shared creative landscape. \nASL interpretation and live captions will be available for this event. \nABOUT THE PANELISTS \nMegan Arnold is a Filipinx-Canadian multidisciplinary artist who wants to make you laugh and cry and cringe. She creates affective performances that collapse the divisions between humour/pathos\, amateurism/mastery\, play/labour\, and art/entertainment. Her favourite activity is karaoke and she is currently in the Studio Art MFA program at the University of Guelph. Megan has exhibited and performed at venues and festivals across Canada and Europe. She obtained a BFA from the University of Western Ontario in 2015\, and was part of the collectively run studio and gallery space Good Sport in varying capacities from 2016-2019. \nExcel Garay is a Filipina-Canadian diasporic-settler occupying Mi’kma’kiterritory in Kjipuktuk\, Eskikewa’kik (Halifax\, Nova Scotia). Her practice makes use of desire and hesitation as reflective spaces. The two emotions act as beneficial forms of affect that allows both the artist and the viewers to have new understandings of abject experiences from prismatic contradictions\, diasporic experiences\, epistemic violence\, complacency\, and complicity. She often enhances the spectral states of herself and common everyday objects to reveal their complex histories that are tied to extraction\, unseen labor\, globalization\, and colonization. However\, she is also curious about empowering secrets and mutual desires gained by connecting with others through her art and community process. Hauntology and Queer Phenomenology under a necropolitical lens foregrounds her practice. Garay’s works materially manifests as paintings\, weavings\, immersive installations\, and interdisciplinary assemblage. \nThe Noise Witch is an award-winning artist that explores the intersection of art\, music\, technology\, and magic. They weave sound and soul to engulf your ears and enchant your heartstrings. From drag performance to digitally enhanced artwork\, they use a combination of mediums in their work to evoke curiosity\, emotion\, and playfulness from audiences. The Noise Witch has been named a Buddies in Bad Times’ Queer Emerging artist of 2021 and is currently producing an audio-visual EP to be released later this year. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR \nMadeleine Lychek is an artist working in performance and various digital mediums. She explores the use of digital platforms as a mode of creation and performance in and of themselves. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts\, in Studio Art with Distinction\, from the University of Guelph and is currently the Program Director at Ed Video Media Arts Centre.

SUMMARY:Guelph Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year the festival is back both in-person and online. We are excited to be able to gather together once again in downtown Guelph to explore documentaries of social and environmental importance that invite us to think more deeply about our world and community. By continuing to offer online access to the festival we hope to welcome a broader audience to engage in these conversations from the comfort of home through streaming our events and films. Sharing stories that matter is at the heart of what we do. Stories can call us to act\, challenge our biases\, and inspire us to build more inclusive communities. And this year we have more ways to share these stories than ever before. \nAs always\, our festival showcases thoughtfully curated selection of international\, national\, and local films (including one World Premier\, one Canadian Premier\, and two Ontario Premieres)\, with visiting directors/filmmakers\, community discussions\, and an ever-growing film series of short documentaries by local kid filmmakers\, Tiny Docs by Tiny People. \nWe are delighted to be able to offer the 2022 festival for free to folks under 30\, inviting more youth to participate in discussions about our world and community. This year’s festival focuses on diverse perspectives\, fighting for the rights of people and the planet\, and the importance of voice and agency. \n\n\nDates:\nNovember 4-12 (in-person)\nNovember 13-26 (online) \n\n\nGet your tickets here!

SUMMARY:Fall 2022 Season Online Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Gordon Hill Press online on Saturday October 29 at 4:00 EDT as we celebrate our Fall 2022 Season with readings by Sophie Crocker\, Khashayar Mohammadi\, and Rhonda Waterfall. \nThe event is free\, but you’ll need to register for the zoom link here – https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/gordon-hill-press-fall-2022-season-online-launch-tickets-423009411537. \nFind more information here – https://www.facebook.com/events/632372064925674/. \nSophie Crocker’s “brat” is a collection of poetry where smallness begets uprising\, rats signify life rather than death\, and bunnies are slutty woodland sprites. brat makes smallness into power\, resilience\, and survival. \nKhashayar Mohammadi’s “WJD” is an irreverent phenomenology of West-Asia\, where Islamicate consciousness is driven in and out of a plethora of conflicting ideologies and has left an impression deep enough to be read across the centuries. \nRhonda Waterfall’s “Sombrio”\, an alarming and vivid West Coast novel set in the rain forest on the outer coast of Vancouver Island\, takes us into the dark heart of artistic genius and lost childhoods.

SUMMARY:Art as a Career
DESCRIPTION:You CAN make art your career! \nJoin GAC and BCGW for a workshop that will help you prepare to thrive in your arts career! \nHaving a career in the arts can look so different for everyone and often requires much more than just the creation of beautiful paintings or songs. We will take you through the resources and opportunities available to artists in Guelph\, the concerns within the industry and how to get your foot in the door of your arts career. Our workshop will cover careers that revolve around creating art\, as well as the important work that arts organizations/businesses do within this community \nYou can create budgets\, business plans\, and market your product or service with the best of them but you will be missing out on one of the most valuable aspects to an arts career: The Community. Connecting with other artists and creatives is key to success in any arts community\, that’s why the second half of this workshop will bring together a panel of 3-4 creatives from Guelph to talk about their careers and experiences. \nClick here to register for this free event!

SUMMARY:Stokpile\, Justin Laguff
DESCRIPTION:Showing October 24th to November 7th 2022 at 84 Wyndham Street N\, Guelph ON N1H 4E8 \n“Presently\, my practice revolves around prints that are created by layering and editing effects in Photoshop that are shaped by sketchbook drawings with found photographs. This sort of work emerged out of an Undergraduate project in which we were assigned to create laser engraved woodcuts with halftone pictures. Since drawing has long been central to my practice\, I have become increasingly invested in layering\, copying and erasure as strategies to think about how photographs can be used as a source for mark-making. The photos that I used are sourced from family photos in physical albums\, smart devices\, USBs and external hard drives. My selection process entails identifying subjects whose body\, and occupied space\, reflect the index of layered effects that are implemented. The drawings included in the show at Necessary Arts are intend to investigate scale and an obsessional impulse to build layers of effect without photographs.” \nAbout the Artist \nJustin LaGuff is a Print-based Artist living in Guelph\, ON. They have an OCAD in Graphic Design from Loyalist College and BFA (Honours) in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from the University of Guelph. Their practice makes extensive use of old photographs\, drawings\, and editing software to create complex collages\, zines\, comics\, and prints. LaGuff has exhibited their work in solo and group exhibitions in venues at Zavitz Gallery(Guelph)\, Boarding House Gallery\, The Beguiling\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, The Button Factory Arts\, and Temporary Collection.
