SUMMARY:AGG Community Corn Roast + Fall Season Launch
DESCRIPTION:Community Corn Roast + Fall Season Launch\nWednesday\, September 14 | 5:30 – 8:30 pm\nFree | In person\nDonald Forster Sculpture Park \nJoin us for the launch of the AGG’s upcoming season and the fall harvest with an opening reception on Wednesday\, September 14 at 5:30 pm. As well as ᖃᐅᑕᒫᑦ | Qautamaat\, the gallery’s new fall exhibitions include Anahita Norouzi: Planting Displacement\, guest curated by Amin Alsaden\, as well as Homecoming\, featuring Anita Cazzola\, Laura Grier\, and Justine Woods and curated by Erin Szikora\, recipient of the 2022 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators. As part of the event\, visiting artist Ron Benner brings his roving corn-roasting wagon\, Maize Barbacoa\, to the Art Gallery of Guelph. Part sculpture\, part installation\, part performance\, enjoy fresh local corn and celebrate the artists and curators in attendance. \nBased in London\, Ontario\, Ron Benner’s artistic practice and research often focuses on maize\, a crop that has been grown and roasted throughout the Americas for over 6\,000 years. Concerned with how the globalization of seed circulation and farming methods has impacted local communities and contexts\, his work highlights the connections between colonization and commercialization and the loss of biodiversity as well as global indigenous traditions and cultures.

SUMMARY:Home Coming - AGG Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Anita Cazzola\, Laura Grier\, and Justine Woods \nSeptember 14\, 2022 – December 21\, 2022 \nCurated by Erin Szikora\, 2022 winner of the Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators \nHomecoming is an exhibition that considers the complexity and multiplicity of home. To return home is to reconnect to the familiar and the familial: the activities\, people\, and places that sustain us and provide us with safety\, stability\, and comfort. But where do we go when we don’t have “home” to return to? To many\, this location or feeling has become elusive due to increasing social and cultural isolation and the threat of displacement. \nThis exhibition presents the work of Anita Cazzola\, Laura Grier\, and Justine Woods\, whose contemplations of land\, language\, and community offer creative strategies to rethink our own relationships to both place and displacement. Emerging from Szikora’s curatorial research into alternative economies of artmaking and valuation that prioritize relationship-building as a key element of exhibition design\, Homecoming invites the artists to help shape the exhibition based on their relationships to their materials\, their communities\, and each other. \nOrganized by the Art Gallery of Guelph and presented with the support of the Centre Wellington Community Foundation Middlebrook Social Innovation Fund\, the Guelph Community Foundation Musagetes Fund\, and private donations. Created in 2012\, the Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators is awarded to a Canadian curator or curatorial team under 30 with the goal to support a resilient\, sustainable\, and inclusive arts sector in Canada. This year’s Middlebrook Prize jury was composed of Darryn Doull (Curator\, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery)\, Jaimie Isaac (Chief Curator\, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria)\, and Bushra Junaid (Independent Curator).

SUMMARY:‘Connection & Response’ Elora Centre for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:New gallery exhibition reminds us that the most important aspect of our lives is\nour sense of connection. The Elora Centre for the Arts is set to launch a new exhibition in their gallery\, by award-winning Northern Ontario artist Bruce Cull. The exhibition\, entitled ‘Connection & Response’ reminds us that we are participants in\, and part of the physical world we inhabit. Bruce Cull’s work expresses his fear of lost connection with each other\, with our environment and a hope that we will rediscover old\, new and better forms of connection.\n“I live in a geographically isolated place” says Cull. “Yet I feel less isolated than many people in crowded urban environments”. Many of the objects incorporated into his work have been salvaged from the land he lives on. His stewardship of the land speaks directly to his connection with it. Bruce Cull lives in rural North East Ontario\, near Earlton in the Timiskaming District\, about 60km south of Kirkland Lake and almost 600km north of Elora. He lives on 200 acres\, in a studio that was once a granary for cattle. Cull has always lived in rural areas\, which as nourished his lifetime environmental awareness that has impacted his artistic practise. As Cull explains\, “we begin our lives connecting to our parent\, our siblings and gradually extending those relationships outward to a greater world of friends\, co-workers and others whom we encounter on this journey. Most of all\, we reach for mutually nourishing intimacy in partner relationship and this connection of love brings us hope and strength”\, says Cull.\n“My hope is that the Centre Wellington community and beyond will engage in a dialogue with this exhibition\, finding meaning and connections to their own lives” says Cull.\nThe exhibition will run in the main gallery from July 28 – September 11\, 2022\nAn opportunity to meet the artist will be held on the final day of the exhibition – everyone is welcome to attend the artist reception on Sunday September 11th from 2-4PM in the gallery at the Elora Centre for the Arts. \nFor more information:\nVisit our website at https://eloracentreforthearts.ca/connection-and-response-exhibition-by-bruce-cull/\nGallery and artisan shop summer hours:\nWednesdays & Thursdays 10AM – 4PM\, Fridays & Saturdays 10AM – 5PM and Sundays 12-4PM \nContact:\nAnnette Hansen\, curator\ncurator@ecfta.ca\n416 694-0156
