SUMMARY:Membra Jesu nostri : a sung devotion
DESCRIPTION:ANIMA presents a concert in celebration of Pride \nFriday\, June 7th June 2024 | 7:30 pm | Guelph Civic Museum (52 Norfolk Street\, Guelph) \nTickets available at the door (Pay-What-You-Can) \nMembra Jesu nostri: a sung devotion \nMusic by Dietrich Buxtehude \nPoetry by Luke Hathaway & Arnulf of Leuven \nfeaturing: \n\nLilly Gutierrez\, soprano \nLesley Bouza\, soprano \nDaniel Cabena\, countertenor \nChris Fischer\, tenor \nPaul Genyk-Berezowsky\, baritone \nJonathan Oldengarm\, harpsichord & organ \nJoëlle Morton\, violone \n& \nThe Cardinal Consort of Viols \nSheila Smyth\, treble viol & violin \nLinda Deshman\, tenor viol \nSara Blake\, bass viol \nValerie Sylvester\, bass viol & violin \n* \nOur Membra Jesu nostri is a queer and trans-y reenactment of the devotional rhythms of this beautiful Medieval hymn\, as set to music by Dietrich Buxtehude in 1680. \n\nA work of spiritual reclamation and erotic celebration\, this work also celebrates the quotidian rhythms of caregiving\, and acknowledges the agony of grief. \n\nThis sung devotion is a coming together of music and texts and of friends old & new. It’s a work of breath and movement and of heartfelt listening. \nThe gentle conversation of this première performance has been made possible by the Canada Council for the Arts and the kind offices of composer James Rolfe (https://www.jamesrolfe.ca)\, who edited our musical scores. \nA chapbook with new words by Luke Hathaway and an afterword by Daniel Cabena is printed and published by Karen Schindler\, Baseline Press (https://www.baselinepress.ca). \nFor more information: animaearlymusic@gmail.com \nANIMA (https://www.animaearlymusic.com) a metamorphosing ensemble\, is the gathering-place in art of scholar-singer Daniel Cabena and trans poet/librettist Luke Hathaway. It is a place of queer friendship and sustaining story\, a place where old texts and melodies are animated by spirit and voice. Our work is inspired by Dan’s genderqueer voice and performance history; by early-music sources which suggest new and fabulous possibilities for love and community; and by Luke’s trans-mystical poetry\, in which masculine\, feminine\, and non-binary voices often speak as multiple aspects of a single person. Working together\, we create and commission new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds. We put these works up on their feet in novel performance contexts (workshops\, teach-ins\, touring programs …). We collaborate with other artists whose worlds of sound and spirit enrich our own.

SUMMARY:Xuan Ye: I OWNED\, A TONGUE
DESCRIPTION:Xuan Ye: I OWNED\, A TONGUE\nMay 25th – June 22nd\, 2024 \nEd Video Media Arts Centre \n404 York Rd\, Guelph\, ON N1E 3H4 \nHours: Monday\, Tuesday\, Thursday and Friday\, 10 am – 5 pm \n\nOpening Reception:  Saturday\, May 25th\, 2024\, from 2 pm – 4 pm\, Ed Video Media Arts Centre\, 404 York Rd\, Guelph\, ON N1E 3H4 \nJoint Launch: A Cyberarchaeology of Checkpoints and EveryLetterCyborg Bites: \nSaturday\, June 8th\, 2024\, from 2 pm – 4 pm\, Art Metropole\, 896 College Street\, Toronto\, ON M6H 1A4 \nArtist Statement\nI OWNED\, A TONGUE is about hacking the alphabetic writing apparatus as a technology in an algorithmic narration of cybernetic feedback and data economies. In the exhibition\, the software writes on its own\, interfaces invite you to decipher and gesture\, neon signs emit ringing sounds while scrolling antonym pairs\, and speech voices are indigestible data that insist on unlearning. Six works of digital poetry\, that are six modes of perceptual rerouting\, synthesize unstable and untranslatable signifiers that confuse yet connect us. Meanings dangle in the collective dreams we are all in\, where networked machines relay signals from the other side of reality. Lost tongues are found anew as contexts are displaced\, detached\, and divinated from their normalized mundane. \nAbout EveryLetterCyborg Bites Artist Multiple (Edition of 100)\nEveryLetterCyborg Bites are toothy fortune cookies offering cryptic divinations in camouflage as heteroglossia. Each bite is one message that is one tweet from the Twitter bot @qletrcyborg (2018 – 2022). Each tweet contains words sourced from Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) as its corpus. Each message is encrypted with a word randomly generated from an online database of English dictionaries. Each bite casts a post-cyberfeminist spell\, enchanting the already predicted fortune with the allure of data noise and indeterministic codes. \n  \n \nAbout the Artists and Contributors\nXuan Ye 叶轩 works across art\, music and technology. X is interested in making noise as a generative space to evoke the dissonant\, untranslatable and illegible within more-than-human entanglements. They often involve improvisation\, computation and fiction to compose software\, images\, installations\, performances and editions. Their work has appeared at the MOCA Toronto\, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Shanghai)\, Venice Architecture Biennale\, Peer to Space (Berlin)\, MUTEK Montreal\, Art Gallery of Ontario\, and Goethe-Institut (Beijing)\, among others. Their multifaceted practice has been featured and reviewed in Canadian Art (Winter 2020)\, ArtAsiaPacific(Issue. 111)\, KUNSTFORUM (Bd. 257)\, Musicworks (Issue. 136)\, and Bandcamp Daily (Best Experimental Albums). \nMujie Li is an experimental writer and a doctoral researcher of digital media and culture at the University of Sussex (United Kingdom). Her research explores how literary aspects (such as writing\, reading\, text and language) in digital and computational technological conditions work together to shape digital aesthetics. She is the author of the novella Mirage Time (2017\, published by Dostoyevsky Wannabe)\, and the article On Digital Aesthetics: Sense-Data and Atmospheric Language (2023\, published by Electronic Book Review). \nJason Doell is vital to Canada’s experimental music/sound community. His interdisciplinary practice includes site/context-specific works\, live coding\, and signal-chain manipulation. Doell has created several significant works\, including “Beneath a Landscape”\, a 30-minute subway piece commissioned by INTERsection festival (CA)\, the interactive online work “TURNONANDBENOTALONE” presented by Music Gallery (CA)\, and the algorithmic piece “tbtastiuth” commissioned by MaerzMusik (DE). Doell has worked with international artists such as Quatuor Bozzini\, Continuum Contemporary Music\, Pulitzer Prize-winner Raven Chacon\, and legendary guitarist John Dieterich. Doell’s new album\, Becoming In Shadows ~ Of Being Touched\, was released on American imprint Whited Sepulchre. \nExhibition Catalogue\nDownload here. \nAccessibility \nOn the side of the 404 York Rd building\, there is an accessible ramp that leads to the building’s back door. Head straight through the hall to reach Ed Video’s side door. Parking is available along the side of the building. The parking spot closest to the ramp is reserved for those with accessibility needs. Note that parking spots near other buildings in the area are not publicly available spots. \nAcknowledgement\nThis exhibition has been supported by Partners in Art under its Artist-Direct Program and received exhibition assistance from the Ontario Arts Council. Special thanks to Maddie Lychek\, Program Director\, and Elia Morrison\, Technical Director\, of Ed Video for their invaluable organizational and technical support. \nFounded in 1976\, Ed Video Media Arts Centre is a charitable artist-run centre\, whose mission is to foster the creation\, exhibition\, and appreciation of media arts.Ed Video is situated on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron\, Anishinaabek\, and Haudenosaunee Peoples and the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. SUMMARY:Pronto Plate Lithography Workshop at Otherwise Studios
DESCRIPTION:Learn traditional lithography techniques on an intaglio press using the pronto plate lithography method during this 2-part workshop\, May 16 & 23! \nLearn how to create an image\, work with greasy & oil-sensitive materials when creating artwork\, how to affix your image on your pronto plate\, and print an edition of prints to take home. \nLithography is a printmaking process based on the concept that oil and water don’t mix. The printmaker draws or paints using oily materials\, onto a flat stone\, prepared metal plate\, or polyester plate. This image is made “permanent” through a series of chemical reactions and then printed using oil-based ink. The pronto plate method is a safer method without the harmful chemicals required for traditional stone lithography. \nTo ensure willing participants have access to educational opportunities\, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers. Space permitting\, we can provide complimentary spots in this workshop.

SUMMARY:Sandy Lindal speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Meeting \n\n\nConfessions of a Scrapaholic\n\n\n\n\nSandy’s trunk show is called “Confessions of a Scrapaholic”. She takes you through a lighthearted journey of quilting with friends. Her one-hour trunk show includes approximately 45 quilts. She is currently working on a series of quilts  and workshops attempting to modernize old stash. We all have too much old stash and Sandy  loves to encourage you to use it up\, and think about it in a whole new way. \n\n\nSandy’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nSandy\, a former pattern maker/stylist and clothing manufacturer\, found her passion  when she discovered quilting. SUMMARY:Artworks Gallery Guelph: The Space Between Art Show.
DESCRIPTION:ARTWORKS GALLERY GUELPH \n404 YORK ROAD \nGUELPH\,  ONTARIO \nMAY 6 – JULY 7\, 2024 \nWhat is “the space between”? For some it’s the distance between two objects. For others\, it’s the concept of negative space. And for yet others\, it’s the emotional distance between two people. Drop by Artworks Gallery Guelph (404 York Road) to see how our gallery artists have explored this theme. Patti Collins is presenting her sculptures in light along with highly textured abstract paintings. Scenes of nature and waterscapes have captured the imagination of chalk pastel artist\, Suzanne Wakefield. Nancy Farrell ‘s dramatic abstracts create splashes of colour and movement\, with themes of   outer space and bucolic forest paths. Sharyn Seibert has pushed boundaries by creating a glass and canvas installation as well as reminisces around travel and beloved countries.  We are also excited to showcase the work of Kate Rogers\, our Featured Artist who has installed a series of 6 paintings that investigate her development from childhood beliefs to a present reality of confidence and artistic fervour. This collection  has been one of the most challenging shows to date and we’d love for you to visit.  We are open daily from 10am to 4pm. \n

SUMMARY:Jim Gelcer/Paul Hoffert Jazz Trio featuring George Koller
DESCRIPTION:Eden Mills is proud to present the distinguished Jim Gelcer/Paul Hoffert Trio featuring George Koller on Saturday\, May 4. The performance takes place at 7:30 pm in the Eden Mills Community Hall.  The trio features Lighthouse band co-founder Paul Hoffert on piano\, Jim Gelcer on drums and George Koller on bass. \nTickets may be purchased in advance here! \nThe Trio will wow music lovers with an eclectic and varied show filled with singular\, inimitable compositions drawn from jazz and pop classics and from their two critically acclaimed albums – “How High the Bird” and “Jim and Paul with Glenn and Ludwig.” Jim Gelcer adds this tantalizing hint: “I don’t want to give away too many surprises\, but there might be some homages to Lighthouse as well.” \nAudio Link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH8Tt8ltD84  \nHoffert\, one of the founding members of the seminal 1970s Canadian rock band Lighthouse\, is a prolific composer\, author\, academic as well as a recipient of the Order of Canada. Gelcer\, a renowned jazz drummer\, producer and composer\, has lent his talent to artists ranging from rocker Lee Aaron to the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. Bassist Koller is a multi-instrumentalist with an ear for jazz and world music\, who has performed for musicians including Peter Gabriel\, Holly Cole and Chaka Khan. \nTogether\, these three living legends of Canadian music complement each other’s musical gifts by breezing through intricately arranged classical and jazz pieces seamlessly. Their 2018 album\, Jim and Paul play Glenn and Ludwig\, saw the group play thoroughly scintillating\, jazz-infused\, original versions of Beethoven music through the lens of Canadian icon Glenn Gould. \n“Music at the Hall” programs concerts and events to keep Eden Mills hopping\, and to raise funds for the Community Hall operations.  The heritage Hall is proud to be carbon neutral!

SUMMARY:Big Ideas Lecture and Exhibition Launch: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception for the collective’s exhibition What Remains at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. Representing individual experiences through the objects they carry with them\, this piece is made of materials recovered from the desert of Ciudad Juarez that were found half buried. \nImage detail: Monica Lozano\, The Cemetery\, 2022\, detail\, digital photograph. SUMMARY:Choice and Chance
DESCRIPTION:Nancy MacNabb of Guelph and Patrice Baker of Fergus are teaming together for a show of acrylic and mixed media abstract art held at Headwaters Arts Gallery in Alton\, Ontario\, just south of Orangeville. See large and small artistic pieces that engage viewers by emotion and curiosity\, by the heart and the mind. Celebrate with the artists how happenstance becomes one ready and even necessary art-making tool – when chance\, such as found objects and spontaneous brushstrokes\, joins choice\, such as thoughtful planning – in the creation of unique beauty.

SUMMARY:MEMORY FOAM: A RETURN TO FORM\, AND MAKING SENSE OF A MUDDLED PAST
DESCRIPTION:MEMORY FOAM: A RETURN TO FORM\, AND MAKING SENSE OF A MUDDLED PAST \n\nDoors 7:30pm\nShow 8pm\n$20/PWYC\n\nKevin Unstruck is non-binary\, pansexual\, neoshamanic artist born into the Black\, West Indian diaspora. Their work takes them both to the stage with spoken word and hip-hop-inspired performances and into community organizations helping to create supportive anti-oppressive environments. They also work toward reimagining socio-economic systems in ways that center love and care through their corporate partnership\, Second Wind Solutions. Being a poet is central to Kevin’s experience of life. It breathes magic into the ordinary\, speaks somatically from their connection to Land\, World\, and Universe\, and teases mysteries loose with alchemical wordplay truly understood solely by bees\, cats\, and the oddest of humans.\nBuy Kevin’s book: https://www.publicationstudio.biz/books/sublingual-syllabus/
