SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: A Walk with(in) the Dye Plants
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 29 | 5:30 – 7 pm\nFree | In person | To register\, click here \nAnita Cazzola’s artwork celebrates the resilience of wild plants through naturally dyed textiles – a practice that always begins with walking. The simple act of walking invites us to witness the ways in which plants make their home in a space\, demonstrating radical power through their generative disobedience and wisdom in the simple act of being. \nJoin Anita for a walk through the Howitt Park area\, a former quarry that is home to many natural dye plants. This is space of homecoming\, in that it has allowed for the great return of plant species after their displacement and welcomes new forms of life in need of a place to land. Together we will walk gently through this space\, allowing curiosity to guide us\, introducing ourselves to plants along the way and learning about the colours they share as natural dyes.

SUMMARY:Hidden Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Hidden Perspectives is a solo exhibition stemming from the artist’s ongoing interests in the earth’s geomorphology. The exhibit invites the viewer to take a deeper dive into numerous landform processes which shape the world as we see it today. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Unsinkable Lucile
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of Unsinkable Lucile: How a Farm Girl Became the Queen of Fashion and Survived the Titanic at the Civic Museum. Author Hugh Brewster and illustrator Laurie McGaw will give a special presentation on the story of Lucile. \nCopies of Unsinkable Lucile will be available for purchase in the museum’s Hilltop Shop. \nSpace for this event is limited. Reserve your FREE tickets via Eventbrite. \nAbout the book: \nShe was one of the world’s most glamorous women and the most famous fashionista of the Edwardian age. Yet\, couturiere Lucile\, Lady Duff Gordon was born as just plain Lucy Sutherland and grew up in a stone farmhouse just outside of Guelph in Ontario\, Canada. How she went from a backwoods community to presiding over an international fashion empire is a remarkable story of unshakeable determination and female achievement at a time when it was thought that a woman’s place was in the home. \nUnsinkable Lucile is a lavishly illustrated story of Lucile’s lively childhood\, her rise to the top of the fashion world and her survival of the Titanic disaster and its aftermath\, during which she was unjustly vilified. Time and time again\, she proved that nothing could sink her spirits or stop her drive to innovate and create. \nAmong Lucile’s many innovations were the first fashion shows\, the first fashion models and the Edwardian craze for oversized hats. She also helped free women from the corset and coined the word chic. Lucile was also a fashion adviser to millions and the creator of clothes seen in over 115 movies. \nReplete with historical photos and beautiful paintings by award-winning illustrator Laurie McGaw\, Unsinkable Lucile is a humorous\, touching and empowering tale of a woman who beat the odds\, never backed down and changed the world of fashion forever. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenters: \nHugh Brewster is a Canadian editor\, writer and publishing executive who has worked on many books for children\, while being involved in the publishing industry for over 30 years. He began his career in 1971\, as a manuscript editor at Pocket Books Canada. In 1972\, he joined Scholastic Canada as an editor and eventually became responsible for several of Scholastic’s school Book Clubs. While there\, he also started a successful teacher’s book club\, a book club for families\, and was involved in the creation of Scholastic’s Canadian book publishing program. In 1980 he was transferred to New York as Manager of the Adult Marketing Division of Scholastic U.S. \nHe was instrumental in the founding of Madison Press Books in 1979 and returned to Canada in 1984 to become Vice-President\, Editorial Director and Publisher. As a writer\, his children’s books have won a number of major awards\, including the Norma Fleck Award for At Vimy Ridge. He also wrote Dieppe: Canada’s Darkest Day of WWII\, and On Juno Beach: Canada’s D-Day Heroes. Hugh has made television appearances on CTV’s Canada AM\, City TV’s Breakfast Television\, and CHCH’s Morning Live. He is also a guest lecturer for publishing programs at Centennial College and Ryerson University. \nwww.hughbrewster.com \nLaurie McGaw is well known for her vibrant portraits of such renowned figures as jazz artists Oscar Peterson and Gene Di Novi and film director Norman Jewison. She is also known for her award-winning illustrated books: Polar the Titanic Bear\, nominated for a Governor General’s Award\, has sold over 680\,000 copies in five languages. A New York Times review described her portraits for African Princess as “stunning”; she was honored for her work by the NAACP. Portraiture has been featured on four collector’s coins that she has designed for the Royal Canadian Mint\, including the 2007 proof silver dollar and a $300 gold coin series celebrating the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. A graduate of The Ontario College of Art & Design\, and a former instructor there\, Laurie continues to teach: she conducts portrait painting workshops biannually and teaches master classes to small groups throughout the year. The focus of her work is portraiture. Whether in commissioned works\, illustrations\, or historical paintings\, her love is painting people. \nLaurie McGaw’s work has been featured in books\, magazines\, and private and corporate collections for over 30 years. People are drawn to her work because of her ability to reveal the sitter’s inner qualities with warmth and respect. “Laurie McGaw’s portraits have a lively attention to detail that definitively captures the fine nuances of her subject’s personality.”—Signe Ball\, Publisher\, In the Hills Magazine. \nlauriemcgaw.com

SUMMARY:Culture Days: Reshaping Ruins presented by Guelph’s Artists in Residence
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Goldie Mill Ruins brought to life through light\, art\, and sound! Reshaping Ruins is an interactive art project that nurtures the community’s connection between the historic past and vibrant present of Goldie Mill Ruins. The project will reanimate Goldie Mill by bringing community-made visual art\, poetry\, and music into the space. \nThe project began with a call for poetry\, with the winning submission by Jeremy Luke-Hill being used as the text for a choral composition\, based on the creative prompt “How does it feel to experience an old space in a new light?” Local singers of all experience levels were invited to an interactive workshop where they learned\, performed\, and recorded the choir piece. The choral recordings were then manipulated into a more abstract\, ambient track to be played during the exhibition to inspire the visual art component. \nThe culminating exhibition will feature collaborative painting projections\, light\, and sound. The projection will consist of abstract and gestural painting\, paired with video footage of life in Guelph. The collaborative painting will mix with the music\, and animate the sounds flowing through the space\, while the videos will highlight the movements of people and nature in Guelph bringing the motion of life into the ruins. The works will be projected in real-time as the audience interacts with the space\, casting shadows onto the old building and bringing it to life with movement. \nThis project is created by Guelph’s 2022 Artists in Residence – Sophia Chilton\, Caleb Bray\, and Silas Chinsen.

SUMMARY:Culture Days: Leave No Trace - Tait Wilman
DESCRIPTION:Nature and a sense of place are catalysts for Tait Wilman’s work\, her artistic practice explores discursive trajectories between sense of self and place\, through installation\, sculpture\, and performance. ‘Leave No Trace’ is a sculpture located at Royal Recreation trail near Guelph Lake. This sculpture will illustrate some of the local ecology you can find on this trail\, here you will also find a small take away. This zine or take away will not only guide you through on your trail excursion but will provide tidbits about the local ecosystem\, and a creative activity. This activation brings a new perspective to the local nature\, diversity and creativity in the area. The artist aims to encourage exploring local nature to learn and create. \nThe artist wants to acknowledge that we live\, learn\, work\, play\, explore and this sculpture rests on the land within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3)\, the treaty lands and territory of the Mississauga’s of the Credit. She recognizes that the Anishinnabe\, and Hodinöhsö:ni’ peoples have long-standing and ongoing relationship with the land and each other. The Attawandaron people are part of the archaeological record. \nCulture Days happens annually from September 23 to October 16. \nWhere art meets heritage meets a passion for the natural environment\, That’s So Guelph! Our creative community embodies values that define Guelph – curiosity\, compassion\, innovation\, collaboration\, diversity\, environmentalism\, and activism. SUMMARY:Home Coming - AGG Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Anita Cazzola\, Laura Grier\, and Justine Woods \nSeptember 14\, 2022 – December 21\, 2022 \nCurated by Erin Szikora\, 2022 winner of the Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators \nHomecoming is an exhibition that considers the complexity and multiplicity of home. To return home is to reconnect to the familiar and the familial: the activities\, people\, and places that sustain us and provide us with safety\, stability\, and comfort. But where do we go when we don’t have “home” to return to? To many\, this location or feeling has become elusive due to increasing social and cultural isolation and the threat of displacement. \nThis exhibition presents the work of Anita Cazzola\, Laura Grier\, and Justine Woods\, whose contemplations of land\, language\, and community offer creative strategies to rethink our own relationships to both place and displacement. Emerging from Szikora’s curatorial research into alternative economies of artmaking and valuation that prioritize relationship-building as a key element of exhibition design\, Homecoming invites the artists to help shape the exhibition based on their relationships to their materials\, their communities\, and each other. \nOrganized by the Art Gallery of Guelph and presented with the support of the Centre Wellington Community Foundation Middlebrook Social Innovation Fund\, the Guelph Community Foundation Musagetes Fund\, and private donations. Created in 2012\, the Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators is awarded to a Canadian curator or curatorial team under 30 with the goal to support a resilient\, sustainable\, and inclusive arts sector in Canada. This year’s Middlebrook Prize jury was composed of Darryn Doull (Curator\, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery)\, Jaimie Isaac (Chief Curator\, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria)\, and Bushra Junaid (Independent Curator).
