SUMMARY:‘Connection & Response’ Elora Centre for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:New gallery exhibition reminds us that the most important aspect of our lives is\nour sense of connection. The Elora Centre for the Arts is set to launch a new exhibition in their gallery\, by award-winning Northern Ontario artist Bruce Cull. The exhibition\, entitled ‘Connection & Response’ reminds us that we are participants in\, and part of the physical world we inhabit. Bruce Cull’s work expresses his fear of lost connection with each other\, with our environment and a hope that we will rediscover old\, new and better forms of connection.\n“I live in a geographically isolated place” says Cull. “Yet I feel less isolated than many people in crowded urban environments”. Many of the objects incorporated into his work have been salvaged from the land he lives on. His stewardship of the land speaks directly to his connection with it. Bruce Cull lives in rural North East Ontario\, near Earlton in the Timiskaming District\, about 60km south of Kirkland Lake and almost 600km north of Elora. He lives on 200 acres\, in a studio that was once a granary for cattle. Cull has always lived in rural areas\, which as nourished his lifetime environmental awareness that has impacted his artistic practise. As Cull explains\, “we begin our lives connecting to our parent\, our siblings and gradually extending those relationships outward to a greater world of friends\, co-workers and others whom we encounter on this journey. Most of all\, we reach for mutually nourishing intimacy in partner relationship and this connection of love brings us hope and strength”\, says Cull.\n“My hope is that the Centre Wellington community and beyond will engage in a dialogue with this exhibition\, finding meaning and connections to their own lives” says Cull.\nThe exhibition will run in the main gallery from July 28 – September 11\, 2022\nAn opportunity to meet the artist will be held on the final day of the exhibition – everyone is welcome to attend the artist reception on Sunday September 11th from 2-4PM in the gallery at the Elora Centre for the Arts. \nFor more information:\nVisit our website at https://eloracentreforthearts.ca/connection-and-response-exhibition-by-bruce-cull/\nGallery and artisan shop summer hours:\nWednesdays & Thursdays 10AM – 4PM\, Fridays & Saturdays 10AM – 5PM and Sundays 12-4PM \nContact:\nAnnette Hansen\, curator\ncurator@ecfta.ca\n416 694-0156

SUMMARY:Backyard Theatre: McCrae in the Mirror
DESCRIPTION:Thursday through Saturday\, July 21 – 23| 7 PM\nThursday through Saturday\, July 28 – 30 | 7 PM\nSaturday matinee\, July 23 and 30| 2 PM \nMcCrae in the Mirror is a dramatic flight of fancy inspired by the life\, work and renowned storytelling panache of Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. Playwright Mike Ford animates well and lesser-known aspects of Guelph’s most famous son in a provocative voyage through the mists of the past. \nWritten and performed by Mike Ford. \nMcCrae House is the birthplace of Lt. Col. John McCrae\, the doctor\, soldier\, and poet who wrote In Flanders Fields. This show provides an opportunity to connect with the legacy of John McCrae in a contemporary and compelling way\, set against the backdrop of the historic and beautiful limestone cottage in which he was born. \nRunning Time: 75 minutes (no intermission) \nAbout Mike Ford: \nMIKE FORD is a franco-Ontarian singer-songwriter\, playwright\, and educator.  Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal-awarded and Juno-nominated for his bilingual Canadian history Troubadour concerts and repertoire\, Mike co-created the musical Chelsea Sunrise (Theatre Sheridan)\, recorded an album of original Great Lakes songs with David Francey\, toured with The Arrogant Worms\, sold over a quarter million albums with Moxy Früvous\, and once crashed through a stained-glass window at a Buffalo record store. \nMcCrae in the Mirror is Mike’s third original work of theatre to be presented internationally by Guelph Museums\, after Sons of ’17 (originally created for The Governor General’s History Awards) and John Galt & The Instant City (commissioned\, as was ‘McCrae…’ by Guelph Museums).  Mike is now in his 20th year with Prologue Performing Arts\, who present his in-school and online concerts throughout Ontario. He wishes he could play flamenco guitar. \nThis McCrae 150 initiative is generously supported by Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund and the Musagetes Fund\, Guelph Community Foundation. \n\nTickets are available through Eventbrite or 519-836-1221. Capacity is limited\, advanced booking is required.  \nPLEASE NOTE: This show is performed outside\, in the backyard of McCrae House. Please dress according to weather conditions. We recommend casual clothing and comfortable shoes. \nCash bar. \nIf you have any further questions\, please contact museum@guelph.ca or 519-836-1221.

SUMMARY:Stretched to the Sun - Exhibition by Paige Quinn
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the 10C Gallery (42 Carden St.)  July 17-28 to view the wonderful paintings by Paige Quinn. \nPaige Quinn is a Guelph-based multidisciplinary artist. Her artwork explores ideas of reuniting and reconnecting to nature through relationships and bodily transformation.  She has recently completed an artist residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point\, and has been working on her artwork in her studio in Guelph.\n\nShow description:\n \nStretched in the Sun is a reflection on personal connection to the earth. Paige explores the relationship between figuration and abstraction\, exposing the under layers of her paintings in a way which invites chance into the artworks. The figures in her paintings are caught in the act of transformation and spiritual catharsis as they move and blend with their background in a process to become closer spiritually with the unknown.

SUMMARY:Research & Renewal Artist Talks and Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join Guelph Arts Council for the Artist talk and celebration on July 14 at 6:30pm\, the night includes refreshments\, two artist talks and reconnection with this incredible community! The event will take place at 10C Shared Space (42 Carden St.) on the 4th Floor. \nThe Research and Renewal award was started in the fall of 2021 by GAC and funder\, Jason Nadon. The award creates opportunities for local creatives to engage with archives\, collections\, and resources in developing story or research-based art projects. \nRegister! \nMeet the Artists and get to know their projects:\n\nArboreal Opera by Alia Miroshnichenko\nAlia Miroshnichenko is a Siberian-Canadian composer\, operatic singer\, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Her proposal aims to “rediscover the connection between the Guelph community and its plant-based life by creating a series of musical compositions that would involve collaborative musical co-operation between human and non-human subjects like trees\, mushrooms\, and plants… using an electronic device with censors to read biometric data” and building her music compositions around the biodata. \nAlia Miroshnichenko holds a PhD in Digital Media/Communication and Culture from York University\, and an MA and BA from the University of Guelph. She plans to conduct her research at the Arboretum at U of G. “I chose the Arboretum because it is symbolic on many levels: it is a part of Guelph’s identity\, but it also represents the Canadian identity mosaic: many plants and trees in the Arboretum were contributed and donated from across the world\, and in that\, they represent the local community.” The music composition will have an accompanying digital exhibition space where the community will be able to engage with the artwork. \n\nCarved from Stone by Silas Chinsen and Lizzy Mikulich\nSilas Chinsen is a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and vocalist based in Guelph. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in Classical Guitar and Voice Performance. Lizzy Mikulich is an emerging artist who works in digital drawing and animation. She is a recent graduate from the University of Guelph’s Studio Art program \nSilas Chinsen and Lizzy Mikulich’s research proposal is called Carved From Stone. The proposal says it will “examine Guelph’s long history with limestone to use as the creative material for two pieces of music and animation. The work will use field recordings of local limestone and bodies of water\, and the animation of historic photos and original drawings. \n“The music and animation of the first piece will depict the melting of glaciers and the eroding of rock using audio samples as textural\, percussive\, and melodic instruments. Limestone provided Guelph with both the materials to build many of its older buildings in the downtown area\, and an economic resource to the growing city\,” the proposal says. The second piece will scan and animate old photos of historic buildings to use in conjunction with the audio.
