SUMMARY:Guelph Musicfest presents the Gryphon Trio
DESCRIPTION:Annalee Patipatanakoon\, violin; Roman Borys\, cello; Jamie Parker\, piano. \nPROGRAM: Mozart Divertimento B-flat major\, K254\, 1st mvt. Allegro assai; Beethoven Piano Trio in E‑flat major\, Op. 1\, No. 1\, 1st mvt. Allegro; Schubert Piano Trio in B‑flat major\, D 898 (Op. 99)\, 2nd mvt. Andante un poco mosso; Rebecca Clark Piano Trio\, 1st mvt. Moderato ma appassionato; Dinuk Wijeratne Love Triangle (2013\, written for the Gryphon Trio); Dvořák Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor\, Op. 65 (B.130) \nThe endlessly inventive Gryphon Trio has captivated international audiences for over 30 years with dynamic\, deeply expressive performances. Recognized among the world’s leading piano trios\, the Gryphon bridges tradition and innovation with repertoire spanning European classicism to 21st-century multimedia\, redefining chamber music for today. \nTheir discography of 22 acclaimed recordings on Analekta\, Ondine\, and Naxos includes works by Haydn\, Mozart\, Beethoven\, Schubert\, Mendelssohn\, Dvořák\, Ravel\, Shostakovich\, and Piazzolla\, as well as by contemporary composers such as Valentin Silvestrov\, Christos Hatzis\, and Kelly-Marie Murphy. Broken Hearts and Madmen\, a genre-defying album with vocalist Patricia O’Callaghan\, blends Leonard Cohen\, Nick Drake\, and traditional Latin songs. The Trio’s recordings have garnered numerous accolades\, including three Junos. An ensemble-in-residence at Music Toronto for more than 25 years\, the Gryphon Trio performs extensively throughout North America and Europe. Their commitment to artistic innovation has produced over 100 commissioned works\, numerous multimedia works and resulted in collaborations with a long list of musicians and artists from other fields. A landmark achievement\, Constantinople—a multimedia work conceived by composer Christos Hatzis and created with a remarkable theatrical production team—was presented across North America and at London’s Royal Opera House. More recently\, the Trio produced Echo – Memories of the World\, in collaboration with a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Also featuring singer Marion Newman and actor Cheri Maracle\, Echo is a powerful multimedia work that positions artists as custodians of shared heritage\, giving voice to memories and histories that have too often been marginalized\, silenced\, or erased. \nDedicated educators\, the Trio gives masterclasses across North America and serves as Artists-in-Residence at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. Jamie Parker holds the Rupert E. Edwards Chair in Piano Performance\, Annalee Patipatanakoon is Professor of Violin and Chamber Music\, and Roman Borys is Artistic and Executive Director of Toronto’s long-running chamber music series\, Music TORONTO. Their flagship educational initiative\, Listen Up!\, offers a unique opportunity for elementary students to discover their own capacity to communicate through the arts. Delivered over a full school year\, the program features workshops in poetry\, \nThis is the fourth concert in Guelph Musicfest’s 20th Anniversary Season.

SUMMARY:Helen Martin speaks at Royal City Quilters Guild
DESCRIPTION:Quilts and Their Stories\n\nRoyal City Quilters’ Guild’s own Helen Martin’s love of vintage/antique quilts began when her mother gave her wedding quilt to Helen and her its story. This was also the beginning of Helen’s hobby collecting quilts\, blocks and tops from the early 1800s\, four-block quilts from the 1870s\, crazy quilts from the late 1800s\, red work quilts from the 1920\,  and the beautiful 1930s quilts up to quilts she has made. \nVisit https://rcqg.square.site to purchase a $10 guest pass. You may credit this purchase towards your membership fee later. \n\n\nHelen’s Bio\nHelen began quilting in approximately 1965. Her mother made a quilt for our wedding in 1963 and had used the good corners of old flannelette sheets for filler. Then she discovered polyester batting and the tiny quilting stitches she make using it. She took our quilt apart and I helped her re-quilt it. This was Helen’s first attempt at quilting and she loved it. Helen has been quilting ever since.

SUMMARY:Paratopias On the Stage - Guelph Dance Festival
DESCRIPTION:Presenting Paratopias ON THE STAGE by Pratibha Arts for the 28th annual Guelph Dance Festival! \nCombining Kathak (dance) and Tabla (drum) rhythms\, Bharatha Natyam (dance)\, original music and video design\, Paratopias celebrates the inspiring possibilities of an inclusive and diverse world. Tradition meets contemporary expression with exquisite dancing\, live music\, and visuals for this riveting performance. \nChoreographed and performed by Bageshree Vaze alongside a team of masterful musicians and dancers\, Paratopias pays homage to the St. John’s Hindu Temple in which Vaze discovered Indian dance. \n“This was dancing where you kept noticing further felicities of style. Sometimes during a phrase Vaze would bring her arms into a formal arc\, and then\, a beat later\, turn her head and eyes to resolve the position and bring it into focus. It felt like an archer lining up a target\, then with a mere glance firing. […] Yet just as often she would bring arms\, head and eyes all into the same perfect alignment on the same beat. Here was spot-on archery without preparation\, striking effortlessly home.” – Alistair Macaulay\, The New York Times

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "ENDLESS COOKIE"
DESCRIPTION:Ed Video Media Arts Centre is pleased to host a screening of Endless Cookie\, the animated documentary by Seth and Peter Scriver at the GYMC. This screening is presented in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Guelph. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nEndless Cookie is an imaginatively animated family portrait that explores the contrasting upbringings between two half-brothers\, one white and one Indigenous\, in a humorous oral history. As they reminisce into the recording microphone\, the threads of their stories are punctuated\, interrupted\, or else hijacked by charismatic (and humorously animated) members of the extended family\, including nine kids and ten dogs\, who add to the narrative by indulging in their own reveries. The result is an exploration of identity\, race\, and Indigenous resistance to colonization within a First Nations community; an impressionistic and often surreal depiction of family; and a lived-in documentary of the creative process. \nThere will be a Q&A with the directors Seth and Peter Scriver following the screening.

SUMMARY:Intuitive Creativity: Connecting to Your Inner Language Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Intuitive Creativity: Connecting to Your Inner Language with Gada Jane \nWhere: Guelph Arts Council\, Old Quebec Street Mall\, 55 Wyndham Street \nWhen: May 26th\, 6:30pm-8:30pm \nRegistration is required. Please register here. \nTickets are free for GAC Members\, there is a $5 fee for non-members. \nIn this workshop\, we will explore intuitive creativity by practicing how to connect inward and access your inner language. \nA big part of working with both intuition and creativity is learning to get into flow with the inner signals that can guide your unique expression. We’ll explore specific approaches to doing this by noticing subtle inner signals and responding to them without overthinking. Through a series of guided exercises\, we’ll practice connecting to the next step that feels right and gently bypassing the thinking mind by relaxing into the body\, and allowing more to emerge. \nThis is a practice in noticing and responding\, tuning into subtle cues and letting your intuition move through your creative process. \nArtists of all disciplines are welcome. Whether you work with writing\, visual art\, music\, movement\, or another medium\, this session will support your creative practice. \nWe will experiment with both writing and drawing during the workshop. \n\nGada Jane is a writer\, performer\, and psychic-intuitive. She served as the first Artistic Associate at Pat the Dog Theatre Centre and has collaborated on interdisciplinary film and theatre projects across Canada. She is the founder of The Predella Studio and previously ran the Predella Project\, a local writing group supporting creative development. She is currently touring her one-woman show “Becoming Psychic” to Festivals in the U.S. and Canada. \nAlongside her artistic practice\, Gada works as a psychic-intuitive\, helping individuals understand their inner worlds and creative processes. Her work explores the intersection of intuition and artistry\, supporting people in tuning into their own inner language and allowing their creativity to flow with greater clarity and confidence. \n\n\nhttps://www.gadajaneintuitive.com \nInstagram: @gadajaneintuitive \nTikTok @gadajane \nhttps://enchantedlivingcircle.substack.com/ – Intuitive + Psychic Practice \nhttps://gadajane.substack.com – Creative + Cultural Subjects

SUMMARY:Film Screening: “CELESTIAL QUEER”
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ed Video for a screening of Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain a documentary feature film. There will be a Q&A with the film’s directors Eryn Forster and Sue Johnson after the screening. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nSynopsis: Equal parts art project\, history lesson\, and whimsy\, Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain offers a portrait of an artist who defied convention for a life lived on his own terms. Directors Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson spent a decade checking in with the witty\, erudite MacSwain as he moved about his life in north end Halifax\, returned to his tiny rural hometown of Amherst\, Nova Scotia—where he grew up\, unable to pass for straight\, in the 1950s—and discussed his lifelong\, wildly inventive art practice. The playful\, queer work is cut out\, glued together\, and sung into intricate collages\, analogue films combining handmade animation with documentary and provocative exhibitions. Johnson and Foster\, who knew MacSwain for decades until his death in 2025\, combine myriad formats in the production (including 16mm\, Super-8\, and digital video) for an intimate patchwork celebration reflective of their subject’s own body of work. Celestial Queer now stands as an elegy for a man who was defiantly original\, internationally renowned\, and an icon of artistic integrity. James MacSwain lived how he wanted—unabashed\, uncompromising\, and unforgettable.
