SUMMARY:Collective Stitching Session - “Call This What It Is”
DESCRIPTION:“Call This What It Is” is a permanent work in progress depicting the names of women and girls who have been the victims of femicide in Canada since 2020.  I am currently working the panels for 2021.\n\nThe Collaborative Stitching Session presents an opportunity for community members to participate in the stitching of the names for the 2021 panels.  It is an opportunity to sit in a safe space to reflect upon and possibly discuss the impact of violence against women and girls on the community at large as well as personally\, if you feel so inclined.  This is not a workshop or group counselling session.  The discussion and material may be triggering so it is important to check in with yourself and do only what you feel you’re able to. \n\n\nThe names stitched by participants during this session will be incorporated onto a panel as part of “Call This What It Is”.\n\n\nLed by artist Katie Tonetti\n\nProceeds will be donated to Women in Crisis.\n\nDonate Directly Here

SUMMARY:Between the Lines – Zemlinsky Quartet from Prague
DESCRIPTION:Guelph Musicfest ENCORE opens with a return visit by the ZEMLINSKY QUARTET (on tour from Prague).\n\nSmetana: String Quartet No. 2 in D minorBartók: String Quartet No. 2\, Op. 17Beethoven: String Quartet F major\, Op. 18\, No. 1\n\nSome of the most powerful string quartets say as much between the notes as within them. This program brings together three works where personal confession\, folk memory\, and historical upheaval quietly shape the music from behind the scenes.\n\nBeethoven’s String Quartet in F major\, Op. 18\, No. 1 finds a young composer testing the boundaries of a genre he would soon transform — confidence and experimentation woven into a classical frame. Smetana’s String Quartet No. 2 in D minor\, written as his hearing failed him\, reads like a private diary of fear and resilience. And Bartók’s String Quartet No. 2\, composed against the backdrop of the First World War\, channels folk idiom and wartime unease into music of raw\, searching intensity.\n\nhttps://www.guelphmusicfest.ca/encore_zemlinsky.html\nTICKETS: https://musicfest-tickets.square.site/s/shop

SUMMARY:REIMAGINATION with violinist SADIE FIELDS & pianist KEN GEE
DESCRIPTION:Violinist SADIE FIELDS returns from Edinburgh\, Scotland\, to join her duo partner/pianist KEN GEE for a Guelph Musicfest ENCORE concert at the Guelph Youth Music Centre. \nIn 1935\, the violinist Fritz Kreisler admitted something he’d hidden for decades: several “long-lost” Baroque pieces he’d been performing\, including tonight’s Sicilienne et Rigaudon\, supposedly “in the style of Francoeur”\, were his own invention all along. His response to the outcry: “The name changes\, the value remains.” \nThat question — what changes when we look back and remake something — runs through the whole programme. De Falla turns Spanish folksong into the concert hall; Tartini channels operatic tragedy into the violin; Vitali’s modest original becomes Romantic grandeur in Ferdinand David’s hands; Schnittke plays knowingly with Baroque forms two centuries later. \nThe evening closes with Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending\, no longer reimagining a style\, but a poem\, rising above everything that came before it. \nTartini: Violin Sonata in G minor\, Op. 1\, No. 10\, Didone abbandonata (Dido Abandoned)\nde Falla: Suite Populaire\nKreisler: Sicilienne et Rigaudon\nVitali: Chaconne\nSchnittke: Suite in the Old Style\nVaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending \nhttps://www.guelphmusicfest.ca/encore_festivalduo.html\nTICKETS: https://musicfest-tickets.square.site/s/shop

SUMMARY:Oliver!
DESCRIPTION:Consider yourself at home with Lionel Bart’s classic musical based on the Charles Dickens novel\, Oliver Twist. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike. \nThe streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver\, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse\, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit\, the benevolent victim\, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout\, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back\, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.
