SUMMARY:Guelph Musicfest presents Schmaltz & Pepper
DESCRIPTION:Schmaltz & Pepper is a uniquely virtuosic and entertaining chamber ensemble performing original music inspired by Klezmer\, Yiddish Swing\, Jazz and Classical music. This groundbreaking ensemble features the extraordinary talents of Eric Abramovitz\, the principal clarinetist of the Toronto Symphony and the Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and arranger\, Drew Jurecka\, virtuosic violinist/vocalist/composer\, Rebekah Wolkstein\, founder/leader of the acclaimed Payadora Ensemble\, Juno-nominated bassist\, Michael Herring and Juno-award winning pianist\, Jeremy Ledbetter. \nThis ensemble is redefining the traditional boundaries of Yiddish music\, blending classical mastery with innovative compositions and soulful arrangements. This band has an exhilarating trajectory. A mere 6 months after Abramovitz and Wolkstein came up with the idea to form a band\, they had a full show of original music and inventive arrangements. Their debut performance was a live-to-air broadcast with a studio audience at Zoomer Hall in Toronto for Classical 96.3FM in May 2024. Since then\, they have sold out shows at Ashkenaz\, the Toronto Summer Music Festival\, and Jewish Music Week in Toronto\, and are headlining the ‘Put a Yid on it’ festival in Winnipeg. They are performing at many of the top chamber music festivals in Canada in 2025: Toronto Summer Music\, Ottawa Chamberfest\, Stratford Summer Music\, Elora Music Festival\, and Tuckamore Festival in Newfoundland\, among others! \nThis is the opening concert of Guelph Musicfest’s 20th Anniversary Season!

SUMMARY:Film Screening: “CELESTIAL QUEER”
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ed Video for a screening of Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain a documentary feature film. There will be a Q&A with the film’s directors Eryn Forster and Sue Johnson after the screening. \nPWYC entry ($5.00 suggested) — NOTAFLOF \nSynopsis: Equal parts art project\, history lesson\, and whimsy\, Celestial Queer: The Life\, Work\, and Wonder of James MacSwain offers a portrait of an artist who defied convention for a life lived on his own terms. Directors Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson spent a decade checking in with the witty\, erudite MacSwain as he moved about his life in north end Halifax\, returned to his tiny rural hometown of Amherst\, Nova Scotia—where he grew up\, unable to pass for straight\, in the 1950s—and discussed his lifelong\, wildly inventive art practice. The playful\, queer work is cut out\, glued together\, and sung into intricate collages\, analogue films combining handmade animation with documentary and provocative exhibitions. Johnson and Foster\, who knew MacSwain for decades until his death in 2025\, combine myriad formats in the production (including 16mm\, Super-8\, and digital video) for an intimate patchwork celebration reflective of their subject’s own body of work. Celestial Queer now stands as an elegy for a man who was defiantly original\, internationally renowned\, and an icon of artistic integrity. James MacSwain lived how he wanted—unabashed\, uncompromising\, and unforgettable.

SUMMARY:Standing Wave — An installation by Jenn E. Norton
DESCRIPTION:Standing Wave is a multichannel installation that draws upon natural phenomena\, such as cloud formations\, paired with pareidolia and surrealist imagery to explore emotional and mental states of being. The title derives from the phenomenon of clouds forming above mountains\, known as standing wave clouds or lenticular clouds\, which indicate that rain is imminent. Observers often mistake these clouds for UFOs because of their smooth\, saucer-like shapes. A standing wave is a vibrational pattern that occurs when two waves oscillate at the same frequency and amplitude but move in opposite directions\, interfering with one another. At certain points\, the amplitude is zero; at others\, it reaches its maximum. Norton employs this occurrence as a metaphor in a long-form animation in which clouds transform and morph through representations of places\, people\, animals\, and objects\, as a rolling thought process of hypnagogic visions.

SUMMARY:Yukon Gold Folk Club: Upcoming Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Yukon Gold Folk Club is a concert series that presents small-scale performances by independent songwriters for engaged audiences. Hosting story-forward music in an environment where active listening is held in high esteem\, YGFC is a pop-up listening room in downtown Guelph. \nEmbracing a progressive and expansive interpretation of “Folk\,” YGFC prioritizes story over style\, puts community before commodity\, and eschews strict genre categories in favour of a story well-told. \nIf you would like to attend\, volunteer\, or suggest an artist\, please email yukongoldfolkclub@gmail.com to connect. \nThe April 22 Show: \nVenue: Sally Wismer Gallery\, Guelph Arts Council\, 55 Wyndham St N Suite 22B\, Guelph\, ON N1H 7T8 \nDoors: 7pm \nMusic: 7:30pm \nTickets ($25/Sliding scale) can be purchased here. \nThe Yukon Gold Folk Club sprouts anew with a 2026 season of concerts!\nIn the spirit of Spring\, we’re presenting two songwriters who will inspire you to consider change\, and the balance of grief and excitement that it can hold: Alex Blue and Rebekah Hawker. \nAlex Blue (she/her) is a Jewish-Mexican folk singer-songwriter from Aurora\, CO. With a diverse range of influences spanning from Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell to Shawn Colvin\, Patty Griffin\, and Gaby Moreno\, Alex’s music carries echoes of nostalgia intertwined with contemporary storytelling. Her unique blend of folk songwriting and pop-inspired melodies sets her songs apart. As a neurodivergent artist\, she brings a unique perspective to her songwriting\, exploring her inner world as a landscape of its own.\nimalexbluenow.com \nRebekah Hawker is an Ontario-based folk-americana songwriter and storyteller. One of ten kids raised in Barrie\, ON\, she brings the warmth\, wit\, and honesty of her big-family upbringing to every performance and song. With banter that’s one part kitchen-table conversation and one part stand-up comedy\, her storytelling draws you in and leads you on a journey of honest intention.\nrebekahhawker.com

Add in some scraps you gather from friends and you will have gathered AND USE fabrics that reflect you more than any planned quilt would do. \nInstructor Bio\nLynn Dykstra has been quilting since childhood thanks to having a mother who encouraged nurturing that creative side. An active blogger since 2015\, she shares patterns and ideas and encourages others to adapt them. \nShe served as Illinois Quilters Inc. as  president for three terms. \nLynn is a nurse and teaches at Northern Illinois University. \nShe grew up on a farm in Iowa which she continues to manage with her sisters. \nLynn and her husband of 40 years are empty nesters and live in the west loop of Chicago.
