Each year St. Michael’s Printshop invites applications from provincial, national and international artists who wish to come and work at the Printshop for a one-month period. A total of six residencies are offered during the year.

Artists are paid a residency fee and given full access to St. Michael’s Printshop for a one month period. In return, artists offer one community engagement event, or workshop, and supply two prints from each edition created during the residency to SMP.

Eligible applications to the program are reviewed and evaluated by the jury which consists of artists at different stages of their career from across the province as well as members of the programming committee. While assessing we consider these aspects of the applications:

● Artistic merit
● Clarity of ideas

● Feasibility of the project plan

● Impact (artistic and career growth)

● Community engagement & Workshop Development

The jury is asked to reflect on their implicit biases and prioritize BIPOC and 2SLGBTQQIA+ artists. The jury prioritizes requests based on the assessment criteria published in the application guidelines and within a very competitive context.

How To Apply:

St. Michael’s Printshop (SMP) accepts applications to our Visiting Artist Residency in multiple formats. Our preference is for artists to apply with the google form. Proposals can also be emailed to SMP in writing or pitched to SMP in the form of a zoom interview, which will be recorded for the jury.

Option #1

Written Application: Fill out the google form, and follow instructions on how to submit your support material.

*If you do not have a Gmail (to access the google form) please download the application form link) (and email us your written response (email: [email protected])

Option #2

To schedule a Zoom pitch:

Please contact SMP Executive Director Christeen Francis, at [email protected] no later than Friday January 20, 2023 to schedule a date/time for a 10-minute pitch of your ideas. The zoom pitch meeting will be scheduled no later than January 31, 2023.

  • Please fill out this online form by January 31, 2023.

  • For your Zoom pitch/presentation you will be required to answer the project proposal prompts supplied below

  • Maximum of 10 images/slides in your Zoom pitch

The residency recipient agrees to:

  • Donate two prints from each edition* printed during the residency at St. Michael’s Printshop. One of these prints will be retained in the printshop’s archives, the other is used for fundraising purposes.

*We appreciate that not all contemporary print practices conform to traditional editions and in such instances, we can work out alternative arrangements.

  • Please note a required component of the residency will be to participate in a community engagement event, such as our artist meet and greet or host an open studio night. Visiting Artists are also invited to host an optional workshop (artist fee provided). Successful applicants will develop their preferred event in consultation with SMP staff to identify topics/programming that highlights the applicant’s strengths and best serves the community.

Benefits of the Residency

  • Free membership and rent-free 24-hour access to the Printshop for a 4 week period

  • $1,500 Artist Fee

SMP Staff and the Programming Committee are committed to working with the successful applicant to support them to address their individual needs during the duration of the residency.

We encourage applicants to consider travel and project grants from provincial and national, and funding agencies in your home country. We are happy to provide a letter of support for your application.
