The Nicholas Metivier Gallery was founded in 2004. Today, it is one of the largest contemporary galleries in Canada. The focus of the Toronto art gallery since its inception has been to represent and promote Canadian and international artists from different generations that demonstrate exceptional quality and originality in all media, with a focus on contemporary painting and photography.

 

Nicholas Metivier Gallery has a reputation for and is committed to guiding artists and developing their careers. The gallery has placed works in major private collections and museums in both Canada and abroad. The gallery actively participates in an international circuit of fairs including Art Toronto, Expo Chicago, Pulse Miami, Arco Madrid and Paris Photo. Nicholas Metivier Gallery is a member of the Art Dealer’s Association of Canada (ADAC).

 

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and highly organized individual to join our team as a Part-Time Preparator/Art Handler. As a preparator, you will play a crucial role in the successful execution of gallery exhibitions, art installations, and maintaining the overall presentation of the gallery space.
Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the installation and deinstallation of artworks, ensuring proper handling, display, and security measures are followed.
  • Collaborate with the gallery staff, artists, and curators to ensure artworks are displayed in accordance with exhibition plans and artist specifications.
  • Safely transport artwork to and from the gallery using appropriate handling techniques and packing materials.
  • Prepare gallery spaces for exhibitions, including painting walls, installing lighting fixtures, and arranging pedestals and display cases.
  • Assist in the packing, unpacking, and crating of artworks for shipping or storage, ensuring proper documentation and labeling.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of art supplies, tools, and equipment, reporting any shortages or issues to the supervisor.
  • Coordinate with the gallery team to ensure the gallery space is clean, well-maintained, and presentable at all times.
  • Handle art logistics, including coordinating pickups and deliveries with external art shipping companies and communicating with clients or art institutions as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of industry best practices for art handling, conservation, and gallery safety protocols.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of gallery equipment, such as hanging systems, lighting fixtures, and display materials.
  • Provide support during gallery events, openings, and art fairs, including installation and deinstallation of artworks and assisting visitors.

 

Requirements:

Requirements:

  • Previous experience (2 year minimum) in art handling and installation within a gallery, museum, or art institution is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of art handling techniques, including proper packing, lifting, and placement of artworks.
  • Familiarity with different art mediums and the ability to handle artwork with care and attention to
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with the gallery team, artists, and external partners.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and maneuver large artworks.
  • Knowledge of art logistics, including proper art shipping and handling procedures.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as required for exhibition installations, events, and art fairs.
