KWAG is Waterloo Region’s leading public art gallery, connecting people and ideas through art, with a focus on the best of contemporary culture.  For the benefit of current and future generations, the Gallery collects, preserves, researches, interprets, and exhibits the visual arts and offers dynamic public programming relating to the visual arts, all with a view to inspiring creativity and an appreciation of the visual arts in the Region. Established in 1956 and incorporated in 1968, KWAG is a non-profit organization open to the public and administered in the public trust. The Gallery emphasizes contemporary art, often premiering works by Canadian and international artists. Exhibitions frequently draw upon selections from over 4000 works from the Permanent Collection to provide a context and forum for dialogue on current exhibitions and contemporary issues. KWAG plays a vital educational role in the community, offering a full spectrum of artistic experience for adults, children and families alike.

Job Description

Preparator
The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery is seeking a Preparator to join a high performance and passionate team of motivated professionals. Rooted deeply in community, the Gallery progressively redefines the role of the public art museum in a regional and international context.

Under the supervision of the Curator, the Preparator is responsible for all aspects of exhibition preparation, including installation and de-installation of in-house, traveling and off-site exhibitions, construction of museum standard displays and crating solutions, and contributing to incoming/outgoing shipments and loans as part of the Curatorial Department.  They have excellent communication skills and the ability to accurately execute tasks in an effective manner, working collaboratively with artists, curators, contractors and KWAG staff to deliver their artistic vision.

We appreciate that the Preparator is a uniquely diverse position within the arts sector and that the ideal candidate may not initially have a comprehensive skillset. Training, mentorship and development opportunities are an important part of this position, and we encourage candidates to be open about areas they wish to develop in relation to the following duties and responsibilities.

This is a full-time, 35 hours/week; with an annual salary range of $40,500 to $43,700

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Exhibitions / Events

  • Collaborate with artists and curatorial staff to identify needs and develop installation plans for each exhibition
  • Facilitate exhibition turnover, including painting, wall construction, all AV requirements, lighting, furniture and other display needs while ensuring objects’ safety
  • Contract, support and supervise temporary installation crew
  • Install, troubleshoot and maintain AV equipment for each exhibition and overall Gallery inventory
  • Matting and framing of artworks
  • Receive and report on shipments, including the packing and unpacking of artwork to museum standards and collecting shipping quotes
  • Transport artworks, equipment and materials as necessary
  • Liaise with other departments to execute event set-up and AV needs
  • Proven ability to work simultaneously on several project timelines

Facility / Maintenance

  • Monitor and maintain the appearance and functionality of exhibition, storage, shipping and receiving areas
  • Stay up-to-date with knowledge of AV equipment usage, maintenance and application
  • Maintain and contract repair of equipment and tools as necessary
  • Basic facility maintenance or repair as needed

Administration

  • Work with the Curator to develop and monitor individual project budgets for each exhibition and manage the materials inventory
  • Maintain an up-to-date file of suppliers and contractors
  • Maintain organized files on the installation and technical procedures for each exhibition
  • Facilitate incoming and outgoing equipment loans to other institutions
  • Work safely, observe Health & Safety requirements and ensure that temporary personnel do the same
  • Develop and maintain positive ties with artists, colleagues, institutional peers and community partners
  • Support the Registrar when repair or conservation treatment is required Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • A passion for contemporary art and a love of exhibitions
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in the care, handling, installation, and lighting of art in various forms
  • Comfort working with a range of AV equipment and power tools/workshop equipment (table saw, pneumatic tools, skilsaw, etc.)
  • The following skills and experiences will be considered assets: carpentry, professional wall painting, framing, crating, comfort working with SketchUp, valid license for Elevated Work Platforms and Fall Arrest Certification
  • Excellent interpersonal, supervisory and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines attention to detail
  • A valid driver’s license (access to vehicle considered an asset)
  • Ability to work flexible hours when needed
  • Strength and mobility to perform the required physical duties
  • Knowledge and practice of workplace health and safety
