Guelph Arts Council, with the support of the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph, is relaunching the Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project (GEAMP) this Fall. The highly successful program has run for eight previous rounds, and we are pleased to offer it again in 2022. This project supports emerging artists in the critical transition to professional life.

Guelph visual and media artists, musicians and cultural managers can apply now until Sunday, September 18 at 11:59 pm online at guelpharts.ca. The project pairs emerging creatives with established professionals in the community. Emerging artists and mentors will engage in at least four to six hours of mentorship sessions throughout the months of October and November, sharing experiences and perspectives. This is an opportunity to connect with a like-minded creative while acquiring valuable first hand knowledge of the Guelph arts community and creative careers.

GEAMP Orientation Summer 2019 Round

Our mentors in previous rounds have included curators, arts administrators, practicing artists, composers and established musicians who are important members of the Guelph arts community. Our mentees have gained valuable insights into starting an arts business, writing a CV, recording an album, building relationships with commercial galleries and sustaining a creative life.

Summer 2019 Exhibition and Performance

The mentees spend time throughout the fall collaborating as a group, benefiting from professional development workshops and resources through GAC and completing mentorship hours with their mentors. This opportunity helps build strong relationships between artists in our community and sets emerging artists up for success within their creative careers.

Emerging Artist Exhibition (Boarding House Gallery)
Fall 2019 Round

The emerging artists’ mentorship experience will culminate in a group exhibition at the Boarding House Gallery that they plan, promote, and install with support from the GAC team. Mentees and mentors will also have the opportunity to be featured on Guelph Arts Council’s various platforms including social media and eNews.

All Guelph artists who are interested are encouraged to apply online as an emerging artist, musician, or cultural manager by filling out this online form or as a professional mentor by filling out the form here. The Guelph Emerging Artist Mentorship Project is curated to ensure that there will be meaningful interactions within each matched pair. Mentees and mentors will be carefully selected and paired together based on common interests, goals, experiences, as well as commonalities in artistic practices and endeavors.
