The Guelph Sculpting Group was started over 60 years ago by trained sculptor, Frances Gage. The informal and friendly group welcomes adult sculptors to join their group sessions Wednesday mornings at the Pottery and Arts Centre in the West End Community Centre (21 Imperial Road South, Guelph, ON N1K 1X3).
The facilities at the West End Community Centre offers a spacious studio and storage space with 10 wheeled sculpting stands and light tables that can be used for sketches and bas relief work. The group has also recently opened the sessions up to those that wish to sketch with pen and pencil should space permit. If you are interested in viewing a floor plan of the workspace the group is happy to provide that.
With a mix of beginners and experienced sculptors in the group these sessions offer the unique opportunity for beginners to connect with the established sculptors for advice and guidance.
Interested in joining? Sessions are held in sets of four or five Wednesday mornings, working from live models in nude, near-nude, and clothed poses. There are no membership fees, only session fees. Fees are $40 for the first session and $30 for each additional session, primarily covering space rental and model costs. First-time visitors or very long-absent members can opt to pay the $40 on the second morning of the first set, giving you a chance to learn about the group and decide whether to continue. Whether you’ll be sculpting or sketching, you’ll need to bring your own supplies, including clay.
