Learn all you need to know about working on a film set of any size.

Experience Level: Beginner

Ideal for anyone getting started in film or media production, this workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of how a film set is run and how to be an effective crew member. A variety of production sets will be explored (high budget films/commercials, small indie films, short films, music videos and documentaries) and participants will get to know the dynamics of each one, along with practices and systems that can be applied to any one of them. Participants will leave the workshop with the crucial knowledge and know-how needed to meet the demands of working on any set.

  • Scheduling from Call Time to Wrap
  • Departments and their needs
  • Crew positions and chain of command
  • Key tasks and how to approach them
  • Set etiquette — Dos and Don’ts
  • Practices that can be applied to any set
  • How to find work and continue to work

Participants interested in independent production are welcome to bring call sheets, crew lists, budgets or other production documents from past or upcoming productions. Instructor David Nguyen may review them with the group and explore practical ways the production could be optimized based on its budget and resources. Redacted documents are welcome.
