Art in a Just Recovery Mural Unveiling

On June 7th participants of Art in a Just Recovery will gather at the Guelph Farmers Market for an evening of community care, as we celebrate the installation of our community mural. The mural was co-created by over 70 participants of Art in a Just Recovery, a community arts project exploring community care and collective artmaking. Through a series of online and in-person workshops facilitated by Art Not Shame, the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition, and social artist Melanie Schambach, participants created individual art pieces that have come together to form a large-scale digital mural. The project was designed, in the context of the pandemic and ongoing recovery, to increase participants’ sense of purpose and belonging by fostering connection within and across Guelph’s neighbourhoods and sharing participants’ stories in a public way.

This event will bring participants and other community members together to reveal the mural for the first time. To celebrate, the event will include live music by a project participant, healthy, local food options, and an exhibit of participants’ individual art pieces. Before the mural is unveiled, we’ll invite a panel of participants to share the story behind their artwork and their reflections on community care. Following the official unveiling, participants will be encouraged to stick around to build connections and make even more art together!

OUR INTENTION

We’ve been thinking a lot about what community care means and feels like, and it is our intention that care be the central intention of the project, both in terms of how we create together and what we create together.
