FreeThis September, Ed Video launches a new youth program: Reel Stories – Documentary Filmmaking for Youth, with the support and funding of the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Reel Stories is designed to empower the next generation of storytellers, giving them the tools and confidence to share their voice with the world. Two separate groups of youth participants (grade 4-8 and grade 9-12) will meet on alternating weeks from 4-6PM to create two short documentaries. Participants will undergo the filmmaking process, building skills in scriptwriting, conducting interviews, camera operation, lighting, audio recording and editing under the instruction of Guelph-based filmmaker, Steve Miller.
Skills in communication, critical thinking and collaboration will also be developed throughout the program. At the programs’ end in January, participants will have the opportunity to showcase their completed documentaries for family, friends and local community members. Reel Stories is more than just a filmmaking course; it’s an experience that equips youth with skills that extend beyond the world of film.
Registration for Reel Stories is now open for youth in grades 4-8 and in grades 9-12. Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in this free program are encouraged to email [email protected] with any questions or accessibility concerns. Spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended to secure a spot in this innovative and enriching initiative.
