Artists working in fibre and textile practices are invited to submit an expression of interest for inclusion in Nesting Patterns, an upcoming exhibition curated by Leah Orellana-Banning, Exhibitions & Programs Associate at the Art Gallery of Guelph, to be presented from February to May 2027.
Launching the Art Gallery of Guelph’s 2027 season, Nesting Patterns invites artists to look closely at the AGG’s permanent collection and consider which works resonate most deeply with them and their community. Selected artists will choose one artwork from the permanent collection and create a new fibre-based work as a response. The historical and contemporary works will be exhibited together, inviting dialogue across time, material, and artistic practice.
Examining the role of textiles in the practice of “nesting,” the exhibition explores the reciprocal transformations that occur when establishing a home. Throughout history, cloth has often functioned as an extension of the body, representing protection, comfort, memory, and identity. By focusing on fibre and textile practices, the exhibition honours generations of textile artists by emphasizing the essence of each creator embedded within the very fibres of their work.
Coinciding with Guelph’s bicentennial celebrations, Nesting Patterns positions the diverse perspectives of textile artists with connections to Guelph alongside works from the Art Gallery of Guelph’s permanent collection—establishing an exhibition framework that stitches meaningful, connective threads between artists, community, and the institution’s collection.
