I am an emerging self-taught watercolour artist who began painting in 2020 during the global lockdown. I have had no prior formal training or experience in visual arts, but discovered painting as a form of reflection and connection during a time of isolation, when a friend suggested that I should try an online watercolour class. Since then, my practice has been daily, with many more online classes and I feel that I have evolved into an artist with dedication to the exploration of light, detail, and telling the story through the subject I have chosen.

Working only in watercolour, I am drawn to the medium’s unpredictability and fluidity although I love the detail that I can create with the paint. Influenced by the artist/teacher/mentor that I connected with during lockdown, I have learned the complexity of a subject and particularly am drawn to things that are aged, weathered and worn, such as rust and feathered birds as well as old mementos, like quilts and glassware.

My approach is experimentation using layered washes and focusing on the detailed textures that I find within the reference photo. What began as a hobby to take my mind off of how unsettled I felt during Covid,  has grown into a committed and evolving artistic practice.
