I find myself in new territory as an artist. These days I have enough free time to pay attention to my creative process year round. After I completed my graduate studies, I had time to create installations in galleries and other public spaces. Then while a working parent of young children, I was able to embroider my children’s drawings and observe the development of their visual thinking. When our children got older, I was able to explore my interest in pottery and the ceramic process. With the closing of the pottery studio due to pandemic restrictions, I took hold of that time at home to draw.

My current work continues to evolve from an older series of prints that suggested adult-sized ultrasound images. I’ve taken portions of these fresco-like surfaces, reoriented the stripes of ink to the horizontal and layered bands of colour and text on top. There are tiny gaps between each stripe which suggest the lines of a page. The under-image of the body is still there, but more subtly, often suggesting landscapes.

Observations of seasonal colours are combined with descriptions of the weather, things I hear on the radio, look up or experiences I reflect upon. The date(s) each piece was worked on function as the title. The dates and descriptions are hand-painted with white gouache. For me, this text is another form of observation; but sometimes, I see that the words simply float over top of the layers like clouds.

I think of myself as a drawer because I’m focused on recording observations. I value the acts of slowing down, paying attention, seeing and listening. I hope to connect with others and find my way in this new phase of my artistic life.
