Jane Graham was a much-loved and respected visual artist living and working in the Guelph area for many years prior to her death in 2005. Donations in her memory made possible the creation of the GAC Jane Graham Memorial Fund at The Guelph Community Foundation. Through the fund, GAC offers an annual award for a visual artist(s) to pursue professional development opportunities.

The Fall 2023 round of this award is open and ready for applicants! GAC wanted to check in with Melissa Brunner and Marjan Kaviani-Arani, last year’s recipients, to share with you how their projects went with the help of the Jane Graham award.

The recipients used the award to fund a mentorship with a local established artist and take art courses to improve their artistic techniques respectively. Through the knowledge gained from the courses that Marjan completed they informed us that they have since completed 5 large scale works that visually depict a significant improvement in technique in comparison to their previous bodies of work. Melissa’s unique one on one mentorship with artist David Caesar contributed to improvements in figure drawing techniques, as well as, gave the artist confidence to apply for more mentorship opportunities outside of the award to continue their artistic development.
