If you hadn’t already heard, there’s a new creative space that’s opened in Guelph. Ground Floor Arts, connected to Wyndham Art Supplies, officially opened in January this year and offers a more accessible way for the Guelph community to engage with the arts. This new addition to the local arts scene is hosting the upcoming ‘Print’s Not Dead Fair’ on March 28th.
Ground Floor Arts expands on the gallery programming and education initiatives already established by Wyndham Arts and the Guelph School of Art. While Wyndham Art’s third floor space will continue to be used for summer camps and other creative projects, the street-level space of Ground Floor Arts will serve as a new, more accessible hub for education, exhibitions, and creative exchange. Wyndham Arts staff explain that the new space will allow for programming to grow and adapt to the needs of the community and create more opportunities for artists.
Now that the space is visible and easy to access, staff have received positive responses from artists who have had the opportunity to show their work, from instructors who benefit from the natural light and collaborative atmosphere, and from visitors who can view and purchase local artwork. Wyndham Art Supplies staff explain that programming in the space, such as exhibitions, window installations, print demos, and events like Print’s Not Dead, invites the public to engage with contemporary art, creating connections between local artists and the community.
If you still need a reason to visit Ground Floor Arts, the upcoming ‘Print’s Not Dead Fair’ is the perfect opportunity to see what it’s all about. Print’s Not Dead was created by local printmakers Miranda Nagel, and Jay Button. The event will showcase how multi-use Ground Floor Arts can be, you will be able view and purchase artwork and learn more about the printmaking process directly from the artists. There will also be a Print’s Not Dead Group Exhibition featuring work from some of the participating vendors.
Wyndham Arts Staff explain how printmaking itself is a highly flexible and collaborative medium, with a low barrier to entry, beginners can start with simple DIY techniques like potato or Tetrapak printing. Many people are already familiar with printmaking from school, and Ground Floor Arts offers classes for all skill levels. For collectors, editioned prints provide an affordable way to own unique artwork.
